Build thread: Project Susan(aka Green with Envy) 2012 drift mustang

got your attention?

this thread will be devoted to the build-up, tear-down, and abuse of my 2012 mustang GT, Susan.

some kind of camber/caster plate kit(which one will give me the most camber/caster?)
Drift knuckles courtesy of the Awesome Shop USA

chassis:
full roll cage
weight reduction
strut tower braces front and rear
backseat delete/chassis brace

driver ergonomics:
BRIDE gias low max seats
5 point harness
Boss/GT500 steering wheel
better pedals
hydraulic handbrake

gauges/instrumentation:
Ford racing dash pod loaded with oil pressure, wideband 02, and trans temp
shift light

driveline:
custom dyno tune
1 piece aluminum driveshaft with driveshaft hoops
McLeod RXT Twin Disc 1000HP Clutch
SPEC Billet Aluminum Flywheel
Ford Racing High Performance Clutch Fluid Line
disable TCS and Advance-trac RSC

appearance:
GT/CS lower valance with BOSS splitter
Saleen S281 grille(maybe)
bright green reverse C-stripes on hood and doors.
Bright Green anodized RTR drift SVE wheels
about 2" drop courtesy of TIEN
GT500 wing
GT500 rear diffuser in CF
liberal dosage of CF to all un-painted plastic

so far I've had a little practice drifting in the mustang stock, with just the shifter.

I've learned so far:
1) that the stock clutch will not hold up to long term clutch-kicking.
2) that the stock handbrake is barely able to lock up the back tires(tightening the cable helps, as does 40psi of air in the tires)
3)holy body roll batman! this thing is waaaay undersprung and waaaay underdamped.
4)that the stock suspension has a tendancy to induce snap oversteer
5) that at full lock, there's nowhere near enough steering angle to get sliding with the kind of angle I want
6)this wonderful electric assist power steering dampens steering feedback entirely too much
7)I need more caster. Not sure what stock is, but I'd like to get 10-15 degrees of caster
there are a handful of ways to get the back end out and sliding, including:
clutch-kicking
using weight transfer tricks(lift-off,snap oversteer, flick/feint, brake tapping, etc)
pulling on the e-brake
delivering more power than your available traction can handle.

Of these, in stock form, the car has no problem whatsoever over-powering these crappy pirellis. Clutch-kicking works extremely well also, but it's harder on the car.

Of these, the easiest is:
pulling the e-brake. E-brake up, back tires lock up, slide. Let go of it, stop sliding
power-over. Just floor it high in RPM range and let the engine do the work. Easy to go too far and spin out though!
Clutch-kick! the most fun, from a 3rd gear roll, clutch in, rev, sidestep clutch. This does a very good job of upsetting the chassis and cuasing you to spin out, at least with stock suspension

That's a long list of mods. What kind of time frame are you planning on doing all of this over?

It'll be over the course of a few years. I'm hella broke right now, so I'm focusing on cheap/free stuff. Coilovers will come this spring, same with the Awesome Shop knuckles, basically the stuff that will make the biggest difference are highest priority.

The crazier stuff like chassis stiffening, hardcore weight reduction, and cage won't happen until the car is paid off

It looks like an overwhelming mod list, but the list for my Dakota was much longer, and over the course of about 5 years I did almost every single item on the list , and then some.

That kenne-bell equipped Dakota R/T with 4 link rear, BC coilovers, and a cutting brake, was an absolute blast to drive. Hopefully my efforts with Susan will have similar results.

A few helpful words of advice from Vaughn Gittin Jr., as well as the easiest way to disable TCS and advancetrac

current mini-project, hydraulic handbrake. need to find a master cylinder that looks like this that isnt $600

fun with vinyl:

crappy Gittin inspired photoshop, or, killing time.
