Black Plastic, Mutton chops and all....

What are your thoughts as this looks to be the real eye sore.

The shape of the mutton chops is a little awkward, but the material doesn't bother me. Plus, if there's a functional reason behind it, so be it. I'm fine with everything else. Diaper and all. After seeing so many up close and personal pics of the 2010, I'm confident that the plastic is better quality stuff than the Escape/Avalanche/Aztek cladding.

Black plastic is fine, the shape and placement bug me alot. If I had one I'd be looking for an aftermarket solution for sure.

A Lot of People Hated the First Spoilers on the 69-73's Too. In my opinion the "Mutton Chops" are like a Modern variation on that same theme. They are Just a Modern Aerodynamic Aid, there to direct airflow around the sides of the car, as well as reduce front end lift, along with the Belly Pan they added to the GT's.

Tampa I see where you are coming from on an added aerodynamics, but they could have made it flow with the rockers, and rear fascia. It looks all chunky and slapped on, like a ricer would do with landscaping supplies for his "custom" air dam. I don't mind it being black, I don't mind it being a lot... I DO mind it not flowing, and looking like a chunked up mess. I'm sure aftermarket will come through, but that is by far Ford's #1 drop the ball move on the car.

They don't bother me one bit and they look functional sorta like splitters.

I've never heard anyone gripe about the front spoilers on these cars. I've heard plenty of folks say that the pedestal mount wing spoiler didn't belong on the sportroof.

They look horrible and not aerodynamic at all. To me it looks like they would catch the air and cause drag.

Isn't that what it's supposed to do? Keep the front end down at high speeds.

They are Aerodynamic and Do Not create Drag, or Trust Me, Ford Would not Have Put Them On There. Yeah, they Catch the Air, and Direct it Right Around the Side of the Car, So it doesn't get under the car. They also help direct air around the Tires, which create more drag than they do. The Principals of Aerodynamics are Tricky like that.

the procrastinator; I've never heard anyone gripe about the front spoilers on these cars. I've heard plenty of folks say that the pedestal mount wing spoiler didn't belong on the sportroof.

The Key word I used was "Hated" Past Tense. I was talking about when the 69-73's came out. they slowly became more acceptable by the Mid to late 70's as people began to understand the Benefit of Aerodynamics.

They also kinda remind me of the Aerodynamic Pieces found on the late 70's Firebirds, Corvettes, and Mustang II's

To me the chunky blocky design does not flow and I have a compulsion to take them off. It looks like to me someone was having fun with a miter box showing off his ability to do custom cabinet moldings...

As far as classic car tacked on clunky and cluttering aerodynamic styling devices, less is more to my eye. They are to sporty cars what padded vinyl roofs were to luxury cars.

The Norm Abram Special.

I'd totally drive that!

Dark rocker panels can look fine, reducing the visual mass and height of the body lending a lower, leaner, sleeker effect. However, on the '10, I think they have been rather clumsily used and executed in the front and rear ends. The front muttonchops look like a last minute afterthought while at the rear, the whole lower valance looks bloated, heavy and just awkward.

I am not suggesting this is the answer to this particular question, but remember,

"No one ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American public."
P.T. Barnum

My '69, like most Mustangs of that era, was not well-made at all by today's standards. Fit and finish were quite mediocre. The hood and grille trim, as in the photo above, just would not match up properly. Some stuff fell off.

Yet I loved that car. I wish I had it back. Makes no sense. Neither will many of our subjective opinions on the 2010. Because it is a subjective issue.
