I don't think anyone is arguing that the INTENT of the design is not for accident safety. What I have a problem with is HOW the design accomplishes this safety aspect via a "one size fits all" approach, resulting in a window of fit that annoys me (and apparently others). Not everyone's head is the same shape & size. What if one wanted to wear a helmet while driving? No-can-do for me.

If this pain-in-the-neck was absolutely necessary and sacrosanct, then maybe one or more of the other 30 cars I've owned would have also had this "feature". They did not, because such an extreme is NOT necessary. Sorry, but Ford took the cheap way out on this one and/or has their safety policy setting at "Paranoid".

Luckily this design doesn't bother me but it has bothered my GF as soon as she sat in it. So I can see a lot of these complaints are justifiable. It is unfortunate that Ford didn't research this further and develop a better solution.

Hopefully a 3rd party supplier will see the market that replacement headreasts could have. Even a design that would require using the existing cover.

I was about to pull the trigger on the $199 adjustable tilting headrests from MRT (who listed them with NO other info), but then I saw Shotzy's latest post. Shotz, that makes TWO mods you've made to your awesome-looking car that I desperately want: the suspension, and now the headrestraint fix. (not to mention I love the Kona)

Can you provide any more information about that tool? What did it look like? I am going NUTS here!!!
+1. BTW, don't bother with the MRT adjustable headrests, the 05-09 seat posts are a different diameter and farther apart so they won't work. Ask me how I know.

Fortunately MRT responded to my e-mail to tell me they are developing tilt-adjustable headrests for the 2010+, which told me that the existing ones on their site wouldn't work.

I still think Shotzy's method is best b/c it's free. I am currently co-existing with my stock headrests, but wish I could still get another inch or so of space. I know some people who weren't exactly born via Caesarian section (judging by their head's bullet shape), if you know what I mean, and I don't see how they could ever be comfortable with these.

It really has made a huge difference. Especially for my wife. I would rate it as the best of my mods so far. Just because of the cost to smile ratio.

My neck and back thank me everyday.

Be glad you didn't, they don't fit. They were designed for cars without the seat air bags, the posts are thicker and closer together. Guess how I know...

From what I understand there was a set at the SEMA show that should fit our cars, hopefully they will be released soon.

BTW, I had my posts straightened up, it's not perfect but it's much better. Cost me $20 at the local machine shop. It will do until the MRT adjustable ones come out (soon, I hope!)

I found a company that makes tilt headrests for the 2010/2011. I've been interested in a mustang for awhile now but was always concerned about the crappy ford forward-tilting headrests. Check them out and let me know if they're any good!

I find the stock headrests very uncomfortable; they force my head/neck to bend forward too much and it actually hurts after a long drive. I'm pretty sure I'm not alone in this. It doesn't really matter whether you recline the seat more or less; either way the head rest still sticks out too far forward of the basic seat. If I lean the seat way back and then sit up straight in it, yes the head rest is out of the way, but it's very uncomfortable to drive unsupported like this.

So anyway -- any ideas on different head rests with a more vertical design?

thanks in advance!

We just received adjustable tilting headrests! Check out this link:http://store.mrt-direct.com/11a100.html

Give us a call and ask for Sergio for more information!

Knowing MRT, I would bet they are the exact leather/vinyl that Ford uses at the factory. Scott Hoag doesn't mess around.

Here is a couple of picks of the final.
Thank you for the tip shotzy. I just bought my wife a 2011 Mustang and she asked me to take the headrests out. This looks like a better solution.

I also found this forum bc i was googling the headrest problem.

Sounds like shotzy's solulotion is the best. I think I can mange it.

For the life of me though, so far, I havent figured out how to get them out of the seat. I did see the post that says the buttons to pull them all the way out are flush. That may explain why I couldnt figure it out. I'll go look at it right now. I figured there had to be a way.

I found out about this problem when taking a long trip and riding for about 8hrs down to Florida. I couldnt figure out why my back was hurting so bad. Then it dawned on me it was the headrests. I tried adjusting the seats all diff ways and angles but no help from that.

thanks for the info all.

Edit: I have the 2008 Mustang GT. I just took a closer look and the way it works is there is a regular button on one post hole and a small hole on the other. I used a small allen wrench to poke in the hole while pushing the button on the other and the headrest came right out.
