Auto Trans: Clicks When Starting From a Stop

When in Drive or 2, when I come to a complete stop and get back on the gas quickly I get a click or clunk sound.

If I hesitate before getting back on the gas, there is no click.

If I use SelectShift and down shift to 1st gear before I'm completely stopped, there is no click.

This leads me to believe the transmission has not quite completed it's downshift to first gear before I accelerate. Or, maybe it's between 2nd and 1st or a false neutral. It's as though the trans is dis-engaged for a split second right at the time of the stop.

Anyone have a similar problem?

Dave

I haven't noticed anything like that...I'm at 1900 miles.

Get the dealer to check it and then tune it.

Thanks, that's good advice. I'll do that.

Dave, my auto doesn't do this. However you have a point that you may be a bit quite when accelerating. Hope it's nothing serious.

I'm not sure what you mean by that remark. Could you elaborate?

Thanks,
Dave

Thanks,

If you hit the gas too soon the tranny may be between gears, or not completely ready for acceleration. Just a thought.

I can say that when letting the Wifey's GT stretch it's legs, the AT hasn't done anything like you describe. Hopefully the dealer can find if there is a problem.

I went to Ford Service today. They had a transmission tech drive the car with me in it. He confirmed there is a clunk when starting from a complete stop.

He checked, no TSBs on this problem.

I have an appointment with service next week. I will report the results.

From searching this forum and based on the limited responses to this thread, this is not a common problem. I hope this is repairable in short order, but I'm concerned .......

This could be a bad clutch pack or collapsed clutch plate(s). Repairable, and not a serious problem. I had a Pontiac that did this, and they replaced the clutch plates, with no damage to the transmission. Hope it is a simple fix for you.
