Anyone know Dyno numbers? Supercharged 4.6 vs. stock 5.0

All,
I have done a search on this here in the forum without finding any definitive data on the subject.

I am wanting a Mustang and would LOVE a new 5.0. I would need to wait a few years before buying a new one as I need to save up funds due to currently having too many vehicles now to justify the expense of a new car.
That said, there are a few really low mileage 2007/2008 GT's in my town for sale at about $20K. I could slap on a supercharger for $6K and make some power with them for almost $4K less than a Base 5.0 would cost.

Now I know the whole argument of getting the redesigned car because of the better interior, suspension, etc. I plan to lower the car and put on new shocks/springs, get aftermarket wheels/tires, do some paint mods, change the front bumper and add a hood scoop or different hood on ANY year mustang I get so the benefits of the new mustang over an older are very slim at this point and I still like the looks of the previous design.

So does anyone have knowledge of Dyno results between a stock 5.0 and a supercharged (Edelbrock E-Force type) 4.6l GT? I am really looking to see what the torque is like in the lower RPM's between the two.
While the 5.0 has great overall hp and torque, I believe that the 4.6l on forced induction would put out better power numbers down low where you would feel it in everyday driving or at throttle tip-in when you stomp it. I need a Dyno graph to show me, or maybe a quality clip of a drag race where it does not look like one person red lighted or something.

I do not drive in the 5K rpm range and up much as I like low end grunt and a lack of speeding tickets. If the supercharged version is better for street driving power in those lower RPMs- I may go that route as I could build the entire car the way i want (power and looks) for the price of a new Base 5.0.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help on this issue!

That's a great question, I would like to see that too . . . actually would like to see torque curves for the stock 4.6 versus 5.0 as well

Here is another thread that talks about the supercharger; based on the HP claims it beats the 5.0 but I don't see a torque curve. The new 5.0 does have other advantages like fuel economy and the improved interior, like you said . . . I think I'd be looking for the 07/08 GT at a bit less than $20K, maybe $18K?

depends on what boost you will run the 4.6 at. Mid 11's are easily possible which will beat a 5.0 badly. But realistically, with a conservative boost level a blown 4.6 and a new 5.0 are pretty even

There are dyno charts all over the internet for supercharged 4.6 3V's, if you couldn't find any then you must not have looked very hard. There are also quite a few for the new 5.0's around.

The supercharged 4.6 with the available 2.3 litre blowers(edelbrock, saleen, roush) makes quite a bit more torque down low than the N/A 5.0 as well as quite a bit more power, how much more depends on the supercharger and tune.

Yea, there's loads of dyno charts... Cuz you realize the same engine is in 05-10? You don't just need 2010 specifc Dynos... that'll limit your searches. I just googled "edelbrock e-force supercharger mustang gt" and loads of stuff came up. You can also Youtube it...

I found these within 30 seconds.

Here's one with Kenne-Bell blower, probably a bit on the high end performance wise:

https://themustangsource.com/f799/sa...friend-484597/

Torque comes right up at about 2K and stays there . . . but be carefull on these higher-boost superchargers because you probably need beefed-up internals, I think the stock internals are good for around 425-450 HP.

While I do know there are numerous places to find a dyno chart out there done by random places on the 4.6 and the 5.0, I was really hoping someone has done one on the same dyno by the same people so we are comparing apples to apples. Even the new 5.0 has different numbers from say, Motor Trend compared to Steeda on a baseline run since they were all done on different dyno's at different times. I am sure you can all appreciate comparing similar data to get straight answers.

Many manufacturers (i.e. Edelbrock) have dyno charts that are more for selling thier product. I cannot rely on thier dyno chart to be the same as a place who is not affiliated with them. That is why I came to the experts here since there are so many brains to pick for info.

I guess drag racing videos on you tube can sorta show a race between the two, but as mentioned I was wanting some actual power numbers down low as i do not drag race on the street.

I know alot of people supercharged thier rides for more power, and some did it just to "keep up" when the 5.0's came out. There has got to be one dyno place that has pulls on both engines at similar conditions as that is all I want...

The Edelbrock system is what I am looking at since it has mild boost and I wouldn't stress the engine too much.

I've never seen any direct dyno comparisons between the two.

if you are talking a 3v , then 450-480 rwhp is average. 435 for a bolt on 5.0. the supercharged car will be faster. until the coyote is blown.

a non blown car is easier to 60'. less torque has its launching advantages. now if the blown car is built for launching it will rule.

Good point on the 60' times and the need for more traction on a supercharged car when you launch from a standstill. On the street tho wouldn't the fact that you are already rolling negate the traction issue? I know many people would launch from a dead stop at a traffic light, but usually when you want to mess w/ peoples heads, you are already rolling alongside someone at 30mph and you jab the throttle to show how your car can scoot. That takes the torque that I am referring to, so would the traction differences between a 5.0 and a 3v 4.6l w/ supercharger not really be a factor at that point?

OK,
After lots of long searching I have found a chart that reflects the the Mustang engines/configurations I wanted to know about. I did not answer my own question as good as I hoped, but maybe this will be useful to others who are curious...

A few points to remember about the graphs:
-I do not know what boost that the Roushcharger is at on the pull in blue, nor do I know how that blower is compared to the Edelbrock one that I favor.
-I do not know if all these were done on the same dyno with similar conditions, though I do know they were all done on the same BRAND of dyno.
-The 5.0 have different gear ratios than the 4.6 so one would hope to assume the final drive ratio of 1:1 was used during the test.
- The person who compiled this said all results were production cars with manual transmissions on Dynojets, through the factory airbox and SAE corrected. Average of 2 cars for the 2011 GT result, and 5 cars each for the rest. He pulled the numbers from various dyno sheets, so not an exact apples to apples comparison.

Those dyno charts for the 4.6 is with the small M90 blower, not the TVS2300 which makes considerably more power and torque. The TVS2300 is more comparable to the edelbrock or saleen in it's power capabilities.

Now that you found some dyno info, how about some videos?

Here's my supercharged '07 GT Automatic versus my friend's stock '11 GT Automatic (with handheld tuner). We both run drag radials and hook up with no tire spin. She averages 12.30's @ 113+ while I'm now averaging 11.80's @ 113+ in the 1/4 mile. I have a very basic Vortech V2 non-intercooled blower and am only putting down 393 rwhp on a Mustang Dyno, so most other 4.6L 3V blowers make more power than mine.

A couple of my friends have the Edelbrock E-Force blower and they're making about 400 rwhp (automatics with the standard airbox/pulley) to 450 rwhp (manuals with the race airbox/pulley).

As Brian stated, most base kit E-force's on the 05-10s are putting down ~400RWHP. Mine was a little below that with the crappy Edelbrock tune, but after getting a dyno tune, it bumped things up to 422. I recently added the GT500 fuel pumps and a 3.5 inch pulley and am now at 455RWHP/432RWTQ.

I have not driven a 5.0 yet, but even if the HP/TQ was similar NA to my E-force, not sure they could really be compared as a Supercharged car is going to be a totally different experience with how the boost/TQ kicks in as it just pulls like freight train

No need for fancy analysis. Look at my sig, I've got a Kenne Bell '05 and now also an '11.

Hands down, the '11 is the better car.

Get gears for that low end grunt.

If you stay below 5000 rpms, then there is no reason the run FI, frankly, because you are not driving the car properly.

Edit: by saying properly, I mean to it's potential. Can't imagine justifying FI if you plan on staying low in the rpms.

A tech for Saleen at SEMA told me that a Saleen blower on my 4.6 running low PSI will make massive gains starting from 2k all the way up to 6k+. He said that one of the great things about these blowers...you don't need to get to the upper RPM range to enjoy the benefits. He also said that I would never think about the 5.0 if I had one installed on my 4.6....now I just wish I had $6,000 laying around.

That is what I thought too as I was always under the impression that Forced induction gives you power gains right off the bat as there is air pressure already being created slightly above atmospheric right at idle. Of course the gains are higher up top too as that supercharger spits out lots of air, but even with only 3 valves on the 4.6l, one would have to imagine that throwing more air in the cylinders would help it come to life down in the lower RPMs maybe more so than a natually aspirated engine.

By the sounds of the new 5.0l, the TiVCT may not really come into play till a little higher on the RPM scale like the Honda VTEC and other manufacturer variants. Drag races would benefit from this cam timing trickery, as the 5.0 is going to be more efficient at higher RPMs than a forced induction engine and teh power levels will slightly catch up to each other. Forced air can cause more of a loss as it can effectively blow out the fuel charge from the combustion chamber right into the exhaust at too high of RPM's if there is a little valve overlap, but that is way out of my driving range...

According to the late Carl Shelby, Horsepower sells cars but torque wins races. From the comparison graph, the torque curve for a mild blower on a 4.6 is above that of the stock 5.0. Question is can the driver make use of that much torque down low or will it all go up in smoke during the first 60 feet. In practice would a 5.0 be able to walk away from a blown 4.6 on the highway? I am thinking not.
