Anyone else with a vicious crunching sound from the 2nd --> 3rd shift?

I've got a 2011 GT and after a few months, it seems the first second to third shift after I start the car CRUNCHES like hell (makes the shifter vibrate, too) unless I do it super slow.

Once it crunches it won't do it again until I shut off the car and restart it later.

Anyone got any rough ideas or are there any known problems? It's hard to schedule a dealership appointment due to my longer work hours (don't get home till 7).

Known. Believed to be cold transmission fluid. Once the transmission warms up some it stops. Ford issued a TSB or something on it, but only recommended leaving it as is until a permanent solution can be found. Roughly it seems to happen when it drops below freezing or somewhere around there.

At least that's what I recall.

I have noticed I get it more often when my car is parked outside my GF's place.

But I will still get it sometimes in my underground garage, which is at about 53 degrees F.

Shifting into 3rd slowly seems to get rid of the problem. Should I take it into the dealer?

Wow, long time no post man.

There isn't any harm in having it looked at. Some Si owners had/have this same problem and it became an issue for all Sis, the problem was the 2nd 3rd and sometimes even 4th gear synchros.

But it all started with a few owners going in to have it checked and sure enough is a known problem now with Honda.

Just a piece of mind.

It's a known issue and Ford apparently is working on a solution. Best bet is to take it to the dealer to have the issue documented. Then when the TSB with fix is issued take the car in for the repair.

Is there a way to find out when this is?

Yeaaaaaaaaah. Didn't feel the need to post here much after I actually GOT my car and all my cleaning supplies. I've decided that changing the rear ratios, lowering, and getting better rims are kind of a waste of money at this point; would rather upgrade my computer or invest in mutual funds.

I live in an area with a lot of immigrants and it's amazing how much they love American muscle cars compared to your average DC area status ***** who drives a BMW 3 series (boooooooooring).

Ask your service adviser to notify you about anything that comes up. It also wouldn't hurt to give them a call every now and then and check. They can run an OASIS report for the vehicle and see if anything has changed.

I find mine crunches less if I use the clutch, that's the pedal on the far left

but seriously, my old 5-speed gets pretty stiff when it is cold also -- is there a synthetic transmission fluid that won't thicken up so much when its cold?

I thought someone said Ford was adding friction modifier to the transmission fluid to fix this problem.

I've been having the crunchy cold shifts (spell that with extra care) all winter. It does seem to get a lot better right around 32 F, which is poor consolation when it's -15.

I get a one time crunch EVERY first 2nd to third shift, then never again until I shut off the car for a while.

I dropped it off at the dealer last night and I got a call just now saying they couldn't replicate the problem.

Seriously? It's been going on for MONTHS! Just my luck. WTF. It's also less of a crunch and more of a "clutch isn't pressed down wicked grinding".

Hey man, did you ever start getting better gas mileage? I know you were agonizing there for awhile. Just wondering if you ever figured that out.

Hey , hey, hey .....Jokers, did you miss us any ! Remenber the bold fronts !!!!
You could be experiencing the pressure plate bolts backing out . Definately go fo a test drive with them on a cold morning so they can experience it first hand.

I've been dealing with this since September. I only have 3000 on my car and so far I'm on:

2nd transmission
2nd clutch slave cylinder
2nd pilot bearing
3rd clutch assembly
3rd flywheel
3rd fluid change as per Ford Powertrain Engineering

After 100 miles on the new transmission, grinding again on the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts, difficult to get into 1st when stopped, non-progressive clutch engagement.

There are over 900 posts from owners with the same problems at allfordmustangs.com and multiple safety reports to the NHTSA website. Land Rover Defender2 and Ford Transit Panel van owners overseas with the MT82 are also reporting the same issues.

At Ford's request, I'm bringing the car to, yet, another dealer tomorrow morning (7th time). If they can't fix it this time, I'm going to ask for a refund. I'd like to just ask for another car but there are owners with mid January builds, and grinding, at 300 miles so getting another 2011 may not solve anything. I'm so sad over this as the other aspects of the car are stellar.

Hey guys, long time no see.

I get the grinding even on warmer nights (garage temp is 55F), dealer said he will try to replicate tomorrow morning.

I love this car and the idea of it being imperfect drives me nuts. I pooped a brick when I got my first two scratches on the paint. Got the GF to fix it with some touchup.

Mileage is still averaging 16.5 mpg with driving 90% city (the worst of the worst, northern VA).

Called me back and didn't say whether they could replicate the problem. Told me about a TSB involving problem shifting and that 'Ford is working on a solution'.

Hey jokers I'm not trying to hijack your thread or anything but more of a comparison question.

Has anyone seen these issues in the T-56 from the early Cobras on up to the 2011 GT500? Really just wondering as to why the move to the T-56 for all Mustangs wasn't made and what was seen with the MT82 that was that much better. Just price?

It sucks you and all the other owners are having this issue. It seems like some owners are not so an intermittent issue is just odd. Especially when it's not just one or two cars.

Hope it gets rectified. If you guys think my question is a hijack then just don't respond.

Haven't had troubles with the car shifting yet, though my transmission is whining like hell I did launch my car off the line the other day and it didn't hook up 1st and 2nd gear but when it bit in 3rd the car made pop like a gun shot went off. Didn't know if the car got in a bind or what...

Odd, I never have any problem getting it into any gear when stopped. With the clutch left in I can throw it through all six gears in about 1.5 seconds total slick as silk, though I do have something about like Jokers issues, though it seems a bit reduced. As long as the shifter isn't freezing it seems to drop right into gear without any fuss, though I do find that shifting the gears slowly does help when it's cold (clutch doesn't seem to matter, so I just mash it, take it out of the gear and let it fall into neutral, give it a split second then push it into the desired gear and that seems to smooth it out considerably when cold).

We've had fairly nice weather out here lately, and shifting has been remarkably smooth, even though mine does (sadly) sit outside. Still, nightly lows have only been low 40s, and I tend to leave well after the crack of dawn (like 2-3 hours after).

It's fun to have traction again.
