I've had a DD (dandy driver ) plate since 1992. Bad back, nerve damage, plate in my neck, pain allover.................I've never had anyone give me any problems. One good thing is i've never had a door ding because of the wide parking places

No no... You misunderstood. I have seen (and know) people who abuse their privileges. What I mean is, there are perfectly healthy and active people who have tags for their vehicles because their spouse (for example) has crutches, or etc/has a disability right? So I expect them to use their tag and park in the handicap spot ONLY when that said person is in the car with them. Some people abuse it and use it when the disabled individual is not even there!!! That IMO is very wrong. Save that spot for someone who really needs it.

Example in our gym to go workout or at work, there's a gal that has a husband that has the tag due to his disability... She comes in to the gym and works out but parks in the handicapped spot even when he's not with her... Since spots are limited, some folks who really need the spot are forced to park elsewhere farther away.

That's what I mean. Lazy and healthy spouses lol

Ok, I will agree with you there. My wife cannot use my tag or hang tag if she is by herself. I do see people parking there with no plate and no hangtag. I have wondered about asking them but in this world that's asking for some irate person to pull a gun on you too.. LOL

Seriously though, I see what your point was and I do agree. Here in Texas they are pretty strict on handicap. I have seen cops walk up to my car and check my plates or hangtag, and I welcome that.

I am thankful I am in good health and can park half a mile away from the building yet still beat the peg legs thru the front door even when they park in the limper parking. Life is good.

I think it's great for those that actually need it but like anything else these days, it gets abused.

thank you sir. I'm enjoying every mile and every minute of her right now. Although with next week's forecasted weather, I'm debating storing her for the season.

I've never had anyone say anything to me about my mustang, but one time I parked my motorcycle in a handicapped area and one of those parking lot guards ran up to me and began SCREAMING at me, "you cant park here". I stood there for just a second looking at this fool, then took out my handicapped plackard, hung it on my bike windshield, got my collapsable cane out of the saddle bags, then asked him, How about now? and walked off.

I would never publicly question a stranger on this issue. The truth is that you can't tell by looking at someone what's going on inside them. Heck, if they're wearing pants, they could be an amputee w/ full prothetics (I've read of this happening on another car forum) and you'd never know without intruding into their private business.

I will say though, I've (privately) shaken my head in doubt more than once at a certain individual in my town who parks their Hummer H1 (with a hang tag at least) across 2 handicapped parking spots right out front every time I see them at the grocery store. How handicapped can someone really be if they're capable of climbing in and out of one of those every time they run an errand? And taking 2 of the spots seems obnoxiously selfish even if you DO have a valid tag, and makes me question the depth of their need in the first place. Maybe not fair, but there it is (and no, I still wouldn't/haven't actually confront the person over it).

What drives me nuts is seeing a fellow (non-challenged) biker park on the hashed area of a handicap spot. That's the area designated for the side wheelchair ramp of a van.

Clueless M'r F'rs.

She is abusing the tag. And if she is caught then she can be ticketed even though she has the tag in the car. The tag is for the person it is issued to, and not for anyone who happens to be driving the car without that person in the car. My wife's is coded to her driver license and if she isn't with me then I have no right to use the space, and would never use it that way.

I see a lot of this crap that pisses me off, especially when I'm down on the coast in a certain place. They must hand them out at birth down there, I won't get into it but if you saw it you'd understand. Hell, in the place I'm referring to, I've never seen stores with as many handicapped spaces anywhere in America, and they are always full, people waiting on them.

I could get a handicapped tag/placard tomorrow if I wanted to (and have been offered it), however I'm not ready to admit that I'm that ****ed up yet. And I'm not all the time, but there are many times where I could use one, but my conscience wouldn't let me even if I had it because I know there are people that are a lot worse off than me. I might be in pain getting to the store, but at least I'm not in a wheelchair which I'm thankful for. And I think those should be reserved for people that are really messed up.

I don't care if you have a prosthetic, there are people with them that run 5K races, I don't care if you're too fat to walk, not my problem. I'm severely screwed up. Serious back injuries, knee injuries, ankle, not to mention upper body stuff. I might be in pain often, but I can at least walk (albeit in pain), even if I have to limp a lot of times. I don't think I should use one of those spots just yet. Probably will have to one of these days, but I'm not going to until I absolutely have to, can't make it into the store at all.

No offense to anyone, just the way I feel.

Oh I agree 100%.

I was first made aware of this allegedly "handicapped" lady (one of several, I kid you not) when her department had a potluck that morning. So I park in my usual spot far away, I come walking in, this lady in her handicapped tagged jeep comes screeching in. Parks in the handicapped spot, then she comes out carrying a crockpot of whatever puke recipe she did, and comes RUNNING TO THE DOOR. She gets in the building and continues to RUN to her area.

IMO, if you're healthy enough to RUN carrying a dang crockpot and purse in high heels, you're healthy enough to park in a regular spot and walk and save that spot for someone who actually needs.

That was when I found out more about this lady at work and it's her HUSBAND that has a disability and not her.

I don't notice or care since I wouldn't park in a handicap spot even if it was not one. They are always near the door of the building (duh!) and are high traffic. So for wear and tear on the car plus liking to walk, I park far far away. I know some people say they still got scraped, bumped, keyed, etc.. doing that but odds must be a lot lower because in over 40 years of driving I have NEVER got a scratch or door ding in any of my vehicles.

I figure I may care about handicap space use someday but only when I need and get a tag/plate for myself. LoL

I try to walk a brisk mile every morning, weather permitting, so I don't give a tinker's d**m about walking a hundred yards across a parking lot, even if it's raining. And people who would cheat in their parking practices would just as likely cheat in other areas too, so s***w them.

There are certain vehicles that draw more concern than others. When I drive my parents have the mirror dangler. It looks great in my Stang. I just wonder how anyone can use them in pre 2006 Wranglers?

My wife has a placard after multiple back surgeries and we use it mostly at sports events and places where the walk is very far as that's when she struggles.

Most large events spot check cars as they enter ADA designated parking areas to ensure that the permit holder is present in the car. I've seen placards confiscated, citations issued and drivers sent packing on many occasions as they get caught trying to be special to park upfront.
