Anyone do their own stripes?

I'd be interested to hear about your experience.

I put stripes on mine a few weeks ago and they came out great. The process was a total PITA however. One of the things I noticed when looking at our cars with aftermarket stripes was that the spacing between the front stripes wasn't even. Many of them had a smaller space toward the front of the hood and I really didn't want that. I ruined the first stripe I applied trying to keep the spacing constant because I ended up with extra material on the outside edge that I couldn't get down without creasing the material.

I ended up ordering another stripe and laid it down without removing the backing and used masking tape to hold it in place. I set the spacing to 1.5" near the windshield and it maintained that spacing until the front of the bulge in the hood. From there forward the stripe moved toward the center of the hood by about 1/4". At this point the stripe was laying down nice and flat. So I just trimmed the stripe so it maintained the same spacing. I did the same thing for the other side and it came out perfect. The stripes are a bit narrower toward the front but you can't tell.

You have to do the front bumper and rear of the car in segments. Just remember to overlap the vinyl so the edge is facing the ground (if that makes any sense). My stripes are flat black and the seems are invisible unless you look at them from below.

There are plenty of videos on YouTube explaining the process. No one explains how to get the front stripes even that I could find so I figured it out on my own.

I installed the "C" stripes (simular to the Boss 302) on mine a few weeks ago. Piece of cake if you take your time and do the prep. By prep, you want to use masking tape to first align the stripe(s) against where they will go. Take your time and mark off the top, bottom, and/or sides. Apply in shade, and with no possible wind to blow dirt onto the surface!!! Get a good spray bottle, and add no more than 3 drops of dish washing soap to a full bottle of water. Spray the surface of the vehicle as well as the sticky side of the stripe. Place it on the vehicle and align it to it's position. The decal wil move about easily if you used enough spray solution. and using a plastic squeegie (applicater thats used to spread bondo works great), start at the center of the stripe and work out the water. Take your time! After doing this to get the water out from behind the decal, wait about 5 to 10 minutes, then remove the backing. Don't panic if there's small bubbles, as the sun will dry them out when you put the car into the sunlight. This may take a day, but they will disappear. If not, a small needle to pierce the bubble and a cloth to press will complete that.

The difficult ones are the hood cowl, as this tapers down (gets smaller). This takes mor paitience and time to allow the decal to stretch slightly as you squeegie the water out.

Thanks guys, just the kind of info I was looking for.

This sounds like a doable project.

It's very doable. All of Bucko's info is correct. I used 3/4" masking tape to define the center of the car. I put two rows next to each other on the hood, bumpers and trunk. I have a convertible so I didn't have to deal with the roof. You just have to have a lot of patience and attention to detail.

There are squeegees available that are covered with felt so you can squeegee the stripe without damaging it once you remove the protective paper. Also a heat gun comes in handy when you have to work out any wrinkles that might pop up. Just use it carefully.

Did the stripes on my '05 and have to agree, the key is to do the prep work and take your time.

I added red accents on the sides of the 3 black that came on mine... and I gained a new appreciation for pinstripe dudes. I can't imagine trying to get one straight without having something to go by.

Amazing to watch those guys work! Think Overhaulin' had them on a lot. Don't think I could ever do that!

I did my stripes on my '07. Shelby stripes. Every piece I applied I got better at it. Hoods and roofs are easy as cake. Bumpers are a PITA.

Agree, no issues on the front of the hood with the curves? Had a some issues with mine at that point. I had done the Le Mans style stripes prior to that and they were a breeze, rear end was the biggest pain.

No issue at all on the hood.

I just used 1.5" blue painters tape down the middle and them kept a visual 1/4" gap between it and the stripes on each side. When I redid the new hood to match the existing it was easier than I'd remembered.

I used a heat gun on low to help with stretching and contorting the stripe over the bumpers. But I wouldn't suggest it to a first timer. I was very careful and got lucky using it. Also you bar to cut the stripes at the front bumper where they transition from top to front. No other way around it.

I was looking into have the stripes redone on the wife's a while back and the vinyl the guy had was very stretchy, it was able to move with the contours of the hood easily without being heated and had channels to push out the bubbles. Now it's her problem, lol.

BTW, she has the same type hood as Steff. I was impressed with how that vinyl worked, of course it was more expensive.
