Air Bag recall delay hurting Trade in Values

I had a guy at work that traded in his '14 GT for a fusion (I think he thought he bought a '15 stang I kid! I kid!) a couple of months ago. While talking about it I asked him if he got a decent trade in on the '14 since it was still pretty new. He told me that the sales person said that they are not allowed to sale any of the '14s on the lot due to the air bag recall and they have to wholesale the car. In other words he got raped on the trade in.

I thought that was crazy talk until I was at a dealer last week getting the brakes on my wifes flex changed and asked one of the salemen about it and he confirmed what my coworker said.

I understand why Ford is doing that... safety issues... but it stinks that the peeps out there wanting to trade in their car (Im not one btw) are going to get creamed by no fault of their own unless they wait it out...

I don't think Ford is doing that - I think the dealerships are doing that to protect themselves from liability.

We have the airbag manufacturer to thank for this one.

Yeah...BS...when I traded mine in (early August) I got a very good trade in amount and there was no mention of the recall...and they sold the car, so either they received the recall item or sold it with the understanding they would replace the air bag as soon as they received it....

The dealer offered me a $150,000 less than my car is worth due to the airbag issue.

I belive its BS too but I was surprised that two dealerships said the same thing.

The second dealer said that Ford said they are not allowed to sell the car on theor lot. I thought that was strnge since its their Used Car lot at that point and Foerd didnt have say about it.... Unless since the are a Ford dealer, Ford has say in what ever they want.

All dealers have the same low life tactics

The question is, did you see the car listed on the dealer's website after your friend traded it in. And if so, the price they list at, does it reflect?

I went and looked at some 15s a few weeks ago and they said the same thing. They'll take it on trade but they can't sell them until the airbag recall is fixed. They offered me $10k for my 13 premium V6 with 48k. I passed on the deal.

The manufacturer I work for is the same way. Cannot sell a vehicle with a outstanding campaign. Thankfully we only have one model effected by Takata. And our air bag inflators are readily available.

I traded my 13' GT in about 3 months ago with 37K miles on it and got $25,000 for it. It sat on the Ford dealership's lot for about 2 weeks until it sold to someone local to that town. I know they sold it outright because a few days after I traded it in it was listed online in their inventory with pics for 29K...

Your car is worth more than $150,000 dollars? Wow, what kind of car was that you were trying to trade in?

It's B.S. I got $25,000 trade in on my 2011 in July when I bought my 2015. The car is still sitting on the dealers lot for sale.
