Changed my mind on most of this post... I don't feel like debating how this nation has turned into a nannying police state here. So I've deleted that portion. However I will say one thing, having to prove we are not criminals because criminals have adopted a particular behavior is not how free countries operate.

WRT the OP, there are ways to be assertive with cops so you're not sitting there for 8 hours. The vestigial remains of a time when this nation was closer to being a free country. Various legal groups have produced youtube videos on the subject. It is essential to ask the cops if you are being detained and if you are free to go. At a certain point they have to let you, but if you don't ask they don't have to tell you.

Well I do agree with posts here that cops definitely do profile. Two months after getting my Shelby I pull up to a stop light making a right turn. No traffic coming so I make my turn. Got about 1/4 mile down the road and cop comes flying up in back of me. Says he paced me going 55 in a 45 zone, bs i know darn well i was only going 48. then he says he's giving me a ticket for not using my turn signal. granted yes I did forget to use my turn signal. one of the only times i don't. but yes my fault for not doing that. But come one, lets get real, If a cop pulled someone over everytime for not using a turn signal he would pull over 80% of the cars on the road. He seen me a young guy driving a brand new Shelby and seen an oppurtunity. I forgot how serious of a crime not using a turn signal while in a turning lane is. Meanwhile while I was making the turn a guy almost hit another car by cutting out into another lane. Cop doesn't go after him of course. But I mean come on a turn signal? meanwhile there's robberies other serious crimes going on but gotta get the guy in the Shelby who didn't use a turn signal.

But cops definitely have quotas to meet. Going out tonight driving a total of 8 miles one way I passed 7 cops within about 4 miles of each other. One pulled over a guy right in front of me. Then on the way back home seen another guy pulled over. All by the same agency.

And temp tags are no reason to pull someone over. Every car I ever bought I used temp tags until my plates were ready. Cops can't just assume oh this car has temp tags, it is definitely stolen. I've had my fair share of run ins with the cops and yes some were warranted and some were just totally ridiculous.

And people who say cops don't profile, REALLY? On our Mustang cruises we always go the speed limits as not to attract to much attention by cops. We have had cops follow us for miles and miles while we were going slow and obeying all laws. They were waiting for someone to mess up so they could get them. Now I would consider that profiling.

I'm not sure what is normal where you are from but around here at least 80% of drivers use their turn signals.
