Might have something to do with the new piston design/lack of oil squirters.

Not that I would use anything but synthetic, it will be almost required with that oil. Especially in hot temps like AZ or NV.

A dino 5-50 in hot weather would break down very quickly under severe duty.

Actually another thing to watch out for as most of the 5w-50's are designed for older cars and contain more zinc, it has been said that ZDDP poisons catalytic converters. I know for a fact that Syntec 5W-50 has higher levels of zddp than the GF-5 energy conserving grades. Edge 5w-15 is another story and is a great oil but with Castrol changing the names of their lines not to long ago it could be easy to mistake the two and do some bad things.

That's a boss motor. You can tell by the covers near the intake manifold.

On second look, maybe not. But it sure looks like them.

True. Forgot about those. I wonder if someone switched the caps out.

The manual still says 5w20.

Tough to tell from the picture but that doesn't look like a boss motor. That appears to be the standard 5.0 cover. It would be nice if the standard mustang takes 5w50 might make it easier to find oil for my boss.

That will suck for the '13 owners, 99% of all oil change places do not carry 5W-50 and I believe the Ford dealership is the only one that carries it.

Actually, i believe advance auto parts sells a castrol version... It's about $9.30 a quart..

I ran 5W-20 for the first 13K, I have now switched to 5W-30. My drive is almost 200 miles a day round trip; just under a thousand a week. Florida summer is almost upon us, so I wanted a higher viscosity for the summer heat. Ran my first week with Mobile Synthetic gold. No problems, but did notice a drop in MPG by about 1 to 2 tenths. Then again, I've been also running the AC in the mornings lately, that I did not have to do last month.

Not intending to start/restart/ or continue any oil debat (too many of them), but the manufacturers have you running 5W-20 for gas increases. 1 to 2 tenths over the span of tens of thousands of vehicles sold adds up to their CAFE' mileage requirements. That's the only reason for it's recomendation. As to ZDDP in higher viscosity oils, if this was a problem (it's actually good, as it lubricates the valves), Ford would not be recommending it. I don't understand the concern....

The 5W 50 Full Synthetic oil recommendation is interesting, being the exact same as a Boss.

I think Ford must have discovered something over two years with the new 5.0 motor.

I am not so sure that 5W50 is indeed the recommended oil until I see owner's manual. There are indeed threads on other forums discussing this topic and 5W20 has been mentioned as being the in manual, not 5W50.

Unfortunately, I could not access the document provided by the link. So, we will see.
