Only had mine open twice but have been able to simply drop it from 18 inches to close it. I use this method on all my cars to prevent palm or pressure dents from pressing down to close it, it WILL dent.

My 14 works the same way - Have to drop from about 18". If you let it come down more than that it won't latch. The dealer couldn't get it closed when they opened it to show during the pick up. I had to close the hood for them. Is what it is no big deal. Works everytime with the drop technique.

This, i do the exact same thing. Works fine everytime and no slamming. Get to your Ford dealership and have them look into this.

The OPs car needs to get looked at because something is wrong.
But as far as closing the hood. Always drop it. It works best on all my Mustangs.
Besides, who wants palm prints on their hood?

Mister, don't you have two 10" wide stripes to put your hands on? No fingerprints there

I must be old school here, but I don't like slamming things. I lower mine until it latches and then give it a push to close it. I don't think there's much danger of denting the hood. The metal at the nose is pretty sturdy. Just my opinion. As far as palm prints are concerned, a microfiber cloth will wipe those off if you've got greasy or sweaty palms. If you can't close your hood using this method, it probably needs an adjustment.

I saw a video of a Ford performance engineer closing the hood on a GT not too long ago. He had the hood about 18 inches up and cast it downward with a little force - Slam.
Come to think of it, I always close my doors about the same way, only sideways!
