Bought a new 2014 GT w/3:73 gears and 6 speed manual in Jan. First 3K miles was great, then it developed a noise in the rear end at 4K during a trip. Ford dealer determined bad carrier bearings, parts ordered and should be ready in a week. Anyone else have problems with rear axles?

Entire rear replaced about a month ago,covered completely. Defect in casting as per dealer. Leaked from driver side tube. Just in case watts link and steeda x brace installed. I had less than 3k and drove it easy. different story now I push it and have no problems.

I have a 2014 GT with the automatic and 3.15 gears with about 4,900 miles on it and I can hear some type of drivetrain noise. I can't tell if it's coming from the rear end or drive shaft. I will take it in at some point to get checked out.


When I installed my Ford aluminum finned diff cover, the car had less than 4,000 miles on it and the factory diff oil was gray in color and looked horrible.

Gray color is no problem, assembly lube and friction modifier discoloring it.

Thanks, I didn't know that. On some of my trucks that I've owned, when I changed the diff oil for the first time and usually at more miles than I had on the Mustang, the oil was still clear and new looking. I guess I was expecting the same thing with the Mustang.

Hit a curb in November of 2013 with 1000 Kms on the car. Bent the passenger side rear wheel.
Bent the rear axle as well. Replaced by Ford as well as the seals.

Now it's leaking from the pinion seal and the axle tube. Took it to Ford yesterday for a diagnosis. Will post updated,

The car currently has 8400 Kms on it.

Thanks Deysha,
I had them listen to it today when I took the car in to get the tires rotated and the service advisor said it sounded like road noise to him but it was kind of windy out so it was kind of difficult to hear. I'm not going to worry about it yet as I still have plenty of warranty left and if it is a definite problem, maybe the noise will get more pronounced and easier to diagnose. I will let you know if I need your assistance at a later date. Thanks again.

My car has almost 10K miles and in the last 5 months has been in the shop about 6 weeks... rear end has been re-built to include new housing and it still is not right. Dealer has had it 3 weeks this time and called today to say we are a no-go. I have had all rear end components and drive shaft replaced.... have had lots of grinding noises, vibration and leaking. This is my second recent Stang, last was a 2010 GT vert with 5 speed, no issues with the rear end. This one is driving me nuts, GT vert auto. Dealer is great, but not sure where to go from here. Shocked to see all the concerns about rear end issues. Guess I need to get it patched up and look to sell it and get a BMW..

My 2013GT rear was rebuilt by a dealer at around 15,000 miles although it was bad for quite a while before I had my friend who was a Ford tek for years go for a ride in my car and right away said that whining noise is your rear end is not right! He recommended a tek at a Ford dealer who was quite good and my dealer expieriance was great. It took about two weeks to complete some may say that is long but I was fine with it. Rebuilding a rearend is easy if you know what you are doing unfortunately many service tecks have not rebuilt many rearends if any and so they are not all that good at it. Find a dealer that has a guy who has rebuilt a few Ford 8 inch rearends and you should be fine.

Looks like your pinion seal is leaking just like mine is. I just turned over 34K miles yesterday and I'm still waiting on parts to arive from the states before they can fix it. Keep up posted.

I have 3:73 gears on my track pack. I get the occasional whine or humm, but that is normal for 3:73's correct?

It may not be correct? When I bought my 2013 it had around 7,000 miles on it and I asked the selling dealer if my whine was normal and both the service manager and sales manager said it was normal. It was not until several months later that I found that it is not normal and after my rear was rebuilt my 2013GT with 3:73 gears is totally quiet.

Hmmm, I might jack her up this weekend and check for leaks. I've got 23k miles. Replaced fluid at 9,5k mi. Always had the whine.

i have 3.73 MT I had the whine start after my second oil change around 16000 km, or 9000 miles.. im not sure if getting exhaust systems and masking it is a good idea.. ford couldnt hear it but i can

I just had my 3.73 gear changed to a 3.55 as I did not like the 3.73.
A couple of very interesting things happened.
1. The driveline slop is gone.
2. No more whine or noise.
The mechanic that did the swap for me is an award winning ex Nascar crew chief and as you would expect an expert. I called him when I got home, after picking up my car, and said "where did all the slop and noise go"? He laughed and said the stock factory gear installs are poorly done and with the 3.73 gear the noise and clunking is more pronounced. If the gears are installed properly then the slop would not exist or be minor.
My dealer had told me that "they all have slop in the driveline and all the 3.73 gears whine" I now know this is not true but I doubt my dealer, and very few dealers, has a mechanic that can install gears with the finesse required to have a slop free and quiet rear end. It is apparently a bit of an art form to do it well.
My car has 4,500 miles on it.
