It makes zero sense.
But as you said, not really even making 2011's in 2011 , but being able to order a 2012 in 2010 is just flatly ridiculous marketing and only hurts the customers.
Anyway, I'm said my peace here, cheers.
OK
I know it sounds ridiculous. I know it doesn't exactly make sense.
But here's the way it works:
If you produce a 2012 starting in January of 2011, EPA allows 23 months of certification.
Cheaper all around.
2011 will still be 2011 on resale books. They started 2011 early so it really won't hurt.
It saves money, and it really doesn't change much.
The 2010 customers are the ones who will take a hit (same body, less powerful engines).

Actually 24 months. You can legally start to produce the 2011 on Jan 1, 2011 and run through December 31, 2012. My bet is Ford is juggling production to reduce CAFE effects of the Mustang. We may also see the extension of model years (through December of the model year) as the new CAFE requirements start to be phased in.

To the OP, I work at a large volume Ford dealer in the NW. We are a big volume Mustang dealer, as well. Allocations are barely existent now for Mustangs, but there are still some coming for the next several months. No dealer - including yours - is unable to order more 2011 Mustangs yet. They may have turned down allocation for this month's wholesale, but they'll be able to get more in the the following month or two if they want.

So how long should I expect to wait for my GT vert that I just ordered?

That depends on your dealer's current allocation and how many other Mustangs they have on order currently. Each dealership is unique.

unfortunate pricing for 2012

And we have no idea exactly what changes there will be to the '12s yet, we won't until November.

Why does it matter what "model year" it is, anyways?[/quote]

The model year matters to me because of released 2012 pricing. I am looking at purchasing in august (when I will have the funding) a V6 premium coupe. Unfortunately, the 2012 pricing has the V6 premium at $1,000.- more than the 2011 for essentailly the same car. The base V6 goes up around $500.- and the GT goes down by $500.- I really thought I would negotiate on a 2011 in august, not a 2012 with an increased pricetag. My fear is that when I am ready to buy, no 2011 stangs will be available to purchase

You can still negotiate on a V6 '11 if you want one in August... if you can find one. Probably with incentives.

But it's too late to order one, would've been too late in August too,. Last year (the '11s) started being built in April, only 3 months later than this year. So your August target wouldn't have worked any better for you if they did the same this year.

Shh!! My buddy's uncle's brother-in-law's coworker cleans washrooms in the Senate overheard somebody saying we're all getting our income tax back.

I've just spent $10,000 of my refund on eBay on new rims and an electric turbo.

I ordered a new 2009 today. I have a friend at Ford, and he just took delivery on a new Fox mustang. He had to pay extra for that one.

Not from the factory you didn't.

Any "order" submitted now would be an inter-dealer trade. Not a factory order.

I'm not sure about accepting orders right now for 2011's...but I have one on order and it has a scheduled build date of Jan 21 (in 2 days) according to my POC at Ford Customer Service. So, I know they are still building them at least this week...maybe mine will be one of the last off the line before they switch to 2012s...?

Itravelalot...you cracked me up.

They had a production hiccup due to a parts shortage, so they shut the plant down for a couple weeks. They are only running out existing orders from when the order bank closed last year. And yes, yours will likely be the last few thousand of the '11s.

Interesting ..what's the VIN number? Our 2011 V6 was built 1/7 and will be in So. FL soon.

2012 Mustang production was supposed to begin today. However, my first two '12's that were scheduled to be built this week are now delayed two weeks and are to be built the last week of January instead now.

SoFL05GT, my VIN is 1ZVBP8CF4B5170013. Can you use the VIN to check to see if mine is still on schedule for production?
