2011 GT Question About Fuel Gauge

I got my new 2011 GT last week and have put about 200 miles on it since I got it. It did something wierd tonight and I was wondering if anyone else has seen this. My DTE in my info center said about 130 +/- and I had between 1/4 and 1/2tank of gas left. I was driving down the road and all of a sudden, my DTE goes to 4 miles until empty and my gauge goes to E and turns red. Then, I immediately put $20 in premium in it because I wasn't sure of WTF was going on and then my gauge says almost full and my DTE is up to around 250-280 (cant remember specifics). Has anyone seen this on the new ones? I had an '08 for just over 2 years and never saw this.

It has happened to a few people.

There is a TSB I believe about the fuel pump relay module, not sure if this is your problem or not.

Have also heard of a fuel pump going south on one or two, fuel level sender is part of the pump assembly.

Hello zachcrosen1,

This is Deysha from Ford Customer Service. Have you had the chance to bring your vehicle in to your dealership for diagnosis? If not, I recommend you make an appointment with them. Also, you can private message me your VIN, mileage, dealership and contact info to see if I can help in any way.

My fuel gauge drops very quickly from 1/2 to 1/4 tank. I've seen it drop as quickly as 20-25 miles. This is on my list of things that need to be looked at during my service visit.

I just wanted to update everyone on this. I did get a call from a Ford rep last Thursday and told her I would be contacting my local dealership to have them look at the problem. She was super nice!!

Now, yesterday, I had more issues with the car. When I got out of the car on Christmas Eve night, my DTE read in the neighborhood of 115 until empty and my gauge was around 3/8 full. I got in the car yesterday and let the car warm up for about 15 minutes (we got some snow). The gauge said EMPTY and the DTE read 4 left. So, I ignored that and drove on. I drove about 20 miles and ran out of gas on the side of the snow covered 2 lane road. I had my wife following me and she went back to get some gas. I used the little funnel included in the trunk and put roughly 2.5 gallons in the car. The car started right up adn I drove about 20 miles to the gas station and was going to fill up. Well, it would ONLY hold about 8.5 gallons. So, my math tells me it would ONLY hold about 11 gallons when its a 16 (??) gallon tank. What gives here.

Then, this morning, when I got in the car, my info center told me to check my fuel filler door.

I have an appointment Wed morning to have Ford look at this. I'll report back what happens out of that unless I have to postpone the appointment; which is a whole different story!

Zach

I had my fuel pump replaced on Tuesday of this week. Since then, I ran thru 1 tank of gas. Everything worked as normal. My gage went to empty as it should and my DTE read less than 50 as it also should. I filled the tank up and today, I had around 80-85 miles to empty when my DTE meter AGAIN jumped to 4 miles to empty and my gage also went from 3/8 to red. Looks like I will be calling Ford AGAIN about this. I hope the new pump they are puting in cars is not the same pump with no revisions as the one that was originally in our cars!

Looks like the pump that ws used to replace my defective pump is also bad. I'll be calling Ford again tomorrow!

Also remember that you have free roadside assistance included with your car for 60K so if it craps out again you can call and they will come to you.

Thanks Tom. The issue is not that big of a deal. I have been thoroughly impressed with Ford and how they have handled this. I didn't mention it in an earlier post, but they got gas on my left side rear fold down seat and they are replacing it for me. The service manager has been great.

Nice to hear you are being treated well by Ford and the dealer. That always makes the problem a little less stressful. I was out to day and watching the gauge...thanks for the heads up. No problems so far.

I couldn't agree with you more about the dealer making this tough issue easier to swallow! Hopefully you wont have these same issues.

I have an appointment to take my car back to the dealership tomorrow. The Ford hotline told the local dealership to run some tests on my gauge cluster and electronics to see if that is where my problem is. I think I may have been unlucky enough to get a second "bad" pump.

Zachcrosen1,

I had a similar experience with my brand new 2011 GT. I've had it for a week with 400 miles on it. The fuel cap light came on twice and cleared after reseting it twice. I've had about quarter tank left with DTE reading of 100 miles and came to a stretch of empty road so I stepped on it and a few seconds later the instrument cluster turned red and DTE reading of 4 miles. I then was thinking to myself I couldn't have used 2-3 gallons of gas just from that...so I drove to the nearest gas station 3 miles away thinking I might not make it and will run out of gas as the DTE read 1 mile. I was only able to fill 12 gallons which lead me to believe it was a false system reading and I actually had 4 gallons left.

Thanks for the info. I think I will take mine in for a service check too.

I took the car to the dealer again today and they ran all kinds of tests on my cluster and stuff and everything came out good. So, they are going to replace the fuel pump again and see what happens.

Ford determined the issue was due to a faulty fuel sending unit. I've had the car two weeks now after the replacement and have not see the issue anymore. I think it is safe to say the issue is resolved.

Ford Customer Service and Service department have been great. The service is just excellent. I received calls to schedule the appointment. And follow-up calls. The car we returned with a full tank of gas and washed. It was a bit of a hassle with this issue but Ford made it easier to deal with.

How is your car going?

I had issues with the guage dropping quickly from 1/2 to E and the miles to go being off and then when you fill it it only takes about 7 gallons.

The issue is some faulty pumps installed. They don't know when they are just waiting for customers to report issues.

The tank is a saddle tank (U shaped over drive shaft) and some pumps had defective / restrictive feeds from one side of the saddle so in fact you only were using 1/2 the available fuel. The sender would think that all of a sudden you were almost out of gas and YES your engine will quit even though there is gas remaining as it can't draw from the defective side.

Had my pump replaced and now accurate miles to go and guage reading.

I've been having some issues recently where the "Miles to Empty" quickly drops 25-30 miles after getting out of the car and getting back in.

I'm not due for an oil change or anything soon, but is this something that I would be worried about? or just wait a month or two until I take it in for an oil change?
