2011 5.0 & GT500 reliable??
#22
Amen.
Have to agree with you John.... usually, GT500's are not daily driven cars (emphasis on "usually"). With that high a mileage for a 2011...hmmm makes me pause.
I almost bought a used 2011 GT500 or even a 2012 GT500. But alas, the concern (as always) was money. As much as I love my 5.0, if I could have afforded it at the time, I would have gone with a GT500. When I turn 40, that is my goal... to own a GT500. Already begun the process of saving in order to pay cash for it all. Can't wait.

I'm one of the people who did have a total clutch failure in my MT82 transmission. It was fixed under warranty, although it did take a while for the parts to come in. If I had to do it all over again, this is still the car I would have bought. I've never for one minute wondered if I should have bought something else.

/\ AGREE - Amen, this is a very important piece of this discussion...5/60 powertrain warranty...not sure what the OP is worried about...?

Thanks for all the info. This car is gonna be a daily driver so I think Im gonna go for the 5.0 just because of that reason. Im still stuck with the question, what to choose automatic or manual?? The automatic is faster right? but the manual is so much fun.

Go manual and dont look back, I know when you buy a car its for yourself but I really did get sick of the comments from friends and general public...( OHHH ITS A AUTOMATIC) ..

I have a 2011 5.0 with the manual. Great car, perfectly satisfied with the transmission has done everything I've asked of it with ZERO problems. It seems the tranny issues have been investigated and in a large number of cases was found to be more of a driver error thing.
This is not to say that some haven't had very real problems. I have heard of no problems with the gt500 transmission, but then again I'm seldom on Shelby specific boards.
If it's a good price and still under warranty I would definitely consider this.

I'm getting a GT500, and I had the question of whether to use it for a daily driver. I had originally intended to keep it in the garage and bring it out on weekends, but I changed my mind after talking to quite a few GT500 owners on here who basically said, "It's your car, why not enjoy it?" I won't drive it *every* day, but I will drive it a lot more than I had intended to. I will tell you, if you ever sit down in a GT500 while it's moving, you'll want to own it. Expenses for the Shelby are higher of course, but I doubt that's news to you, the OP.
If it's not a matter of price/expense, get what will make you happiest or you'll regret it.

So with my new 5.0, I am "trying" to drive it more... will I drive it everyday? No. But my wife and I will try to make more trips in it. For example, tonight we'll be going out to a nice dinner and so we'll take it.

I had no intention of driving mine all the time, it was bought purely as a toy to get out and have fun in on nice days with no particular destination. If I'm going to the store, out to eat, on vacation, etc. I'll drive something else. I'd rather not have it beat all to hell in parking lots and such. I know some people don't have that luxury and if they decide to buy one of these cars it has to serve as transportation as well, but I don't feel bad about not driving mine any more than I do because it serves the purpose that it was bought for.

I would too. My buddy at work has a 562RWH G37 that he babies. Won't drive it in anything but perfect weather but for good reason, the air filter is by the tranny. I just think of this kind of car as a waste. It's the reason I'd rather have a kit car than a real Shelby Cobra just for all the JA's that would snark at me for driving a real one. I just don't care. No one put 400+ Hp in a car just to sit. I never got it. I'd put a million miles on a split window Stingray if I had one. I'd drive a Ferrari until it fell apart if I could afford it. Some people just love to have the car. Like an ornament really. I guess that's what I like about the Boss guys.
To relate it back to topic...yes, 5.0's and GT500's are completely reliable for me because I barely drive them haha.

Ive had 2 great Mustangs, one a auto ( 2004 Mach1 ) and now the Boss. When I had the Mach I loved the auto, but deep down your gonna always crave the manual..

But when I was purchasing it I was thinking to myself i'll drive it only on the weekends. But now I drive it almost any chance I can get. I've had mine for just over a year now and i'm creeping up on the 9000 miles mark. It's still probably low mileage but it could be much lower. It's just a downright fun car to drive and you get looks from lots of people too. I'm typing this sick right now and I wish I could drive mine right now but I know getting better is best. I love my Mustang!

Choose based on what you like to drive and don't let reliability or outright speed be a deciding factor.

The manual, in my experience, makes me a part of the car. That said, lots of people hate shifting in city traffic and for good reason. As mentioned before me, test drive them both. Only you know the answer to the questions you're asking.

No one can answer that one for you! Do you like driving stick? If so, these Mustangs have a fantastic shifter/clutch and are a joy to drive. No reliability concerns here. Don't like driving stick? The auto is perfectly fine, and you'll be like 75% or so of owners. The auto is probably faster for all but the best drivers, but not as fun.
