i know..i know. i have negative trade equity to deal with here, so i'm being annoyingly frugal. without the trade gap i'd be in one already.

i just decided that i'm going to attempt to sell my current vehicle privately. i won't post again unless it goes well.

thanks again for all the help, this is a cool forum.

The upcoming 3.7L V6 will be more powerful, true, but the current 4.0L is a decent performer (about 15 seconds flat in the 1/4 mile). The new 3.7L V6 is only new by displacement. It is a Duratec V6, which has been around over a decade (2.5L, 3.0L, and 3.5L versions predate the 3.7L which is currently being used in a couple Lincolns).
The 3.5 and 3.7 motors are completely new designs from the earlier 2.5 and 3.0 liter Duratecs, even if they share similar basic layouts (aluminum, 60 degree V6s with DOHC 4V heads). The new motors are significantly more powerful, cleaner, efficient and better on NVH measures, simply better motors. Hopefully they are a harbinger of what the upcoming 5.0 will offer.

The 4.0 motor, on the other hand, has roots as old as a redwood, lacking only a coal chute and boiler. It's basic architecture comes from the European Cologne motor from the early '70's. That was a pushrod design that actually saw service in 2.8 liter form in early Fox Stangs/Capris as well as Capri Is and IIs before that. I actually had a '73 Capri with a 2.6 liter version, which was actually a pretty sweet and quick car for its day. In the late '90's, I believe, at was punched out to 4 liters and the chop sticks were swapped out for overhead cams, though with but two valves per jug. While its power would only be impressive in a 4 banger half its size, it is a tried and true piece if not particularly sporting. I anticipate the 3.7 will transform the V6 Stang from a hairdresser's fashion piece to a very credible performance coupe.

Can't wait for the 2011 3.7L !!
