Under where it says M there is probably extra space to flick the shifter up and down to shift gears. thats all i could think of. And is that a push start button under the left side center vent. i dont see anywhere to insert a key.

Oh Boy!! More is not always better!
This 2010 proto dash has enough buttons, gizmos and controls to operate a space shuttle! Can we say techno overkill by about 5X!! No driver safety distractions here, from our designers at Ford Huh? Just an old design engineer's input on model change. CalStang

All the buttons are because of the extra features ( Sync, satellite radio, Sirius Travel Link ) marketing wants added and how electrical engineering configures the electrical panel. The "styling" designers of the dash don't have much to do with it, except for allowing for its space. Its a common piece among all Fords ( you'll notice the non-nav equipped Mustangs have the same layout. )

The Mercury Sable is also toast, so don't expect a Mercury version of this new Taurus:

That's not a Taurus Dash. It's a New Lincoln. It's was mis-identified on another website, where someone else corrected them. I just can't remember where I saw that. Anyways, just look at the interior of the MK-S. It has a very similar design that is Lincolns new signature interior design.

That is the new Taurus dash. And btw, the new signature Lincoln interior design theme seems to be this double wave design as evidenced by the latest Lincoln concept ( MK-T ) and proven by spy shots of the MK-T prototypes.
I can see how they both have a double-pod type theme, but the difference is the Fords are up at the top above the cluster, whereas the Lincolns, it happens below the cluster.
Anyway

Looks like the ford parts bin is getting smaller. At least they are finally focusing on commonization of parts without commonization of design. I think it is awesome how all three lines share similar components, but yet look totally different.
