2009 or 2010?
Go for the '09
I was in the same boat but I have seen enough of the 2010 to make up my mind... With the 5.0L not coming until 2011 I am not going for the 2010... I am going for an '09 GT/CS and will wait until the next Mach 1 is released
I went over to my local Ford dealer and they wanted to sell me an '08 GT/CS which was in another state and offered me $23,900 which included 6k of incentives. I said no because it was not the right color interior... I was tempted though...
Since I am on the West Coast I cannot find any Vista Blue GT/CS Auto Trans anywhere and with the 45k production limit I have decided to order one with the X-Plan... I bought some Ford stock and they gave me a PIN... I will be placing my order this coming week... If you wait too long you may not find a car with the options you want. My dealer said I can order at the X-Plan price and then I would get any incentives at the time of sale when the car is delivered and I pick it up...
my 2 cents...

I know i'm off topic here but how would I get an X-plan? My Legacy was recently totaled by the woman and i'm thinking of either buying another Legacy or perhaps a Fusion if the price is right. I bet a loaded Fusion with the X-plan would be cheaper than buying another Subie.......
If your company doesn't offer it, you can try and request a PIN number from a Ford employee under what is called "Friends And Family". Same price, just instead of "X-Plan Partner" its a different name. Same discount thought. This is how my buddy who bought his GT/CS got his car. He went onto Blueovalnews.com, registered, and requested an X-Plan PIN. And its a Ford employee you must ask, not a dealer employee. We don't get to give out X-Plan PIN numbers. Hope this helps out.
Does my Uncle and two cousins who work for Ford in Lousiville KY plant qualify? I want the 2011 5.0L, of course, but I heard they can only give them out to so many people. Like two or something really small. I'll have to call them when I get back to the States. About that time (December) we should know all we are gunna know about the 2010 and when the 5.0 will be out.

Thanks for the help everyone. My company does not offer x-plan instead I have a discount on GM products. I haven't turned to the General in quite some time now but if my employee discount can be combined with GM's current "going out of business sale" (aka GM centennial) I may be picking up a Malibu.....but i'm gonna take my time and figure things out. I guess the 97' GT is back to daily driver duty again until then.
Get an '08 or '09
Since I just upgraded to a 2008 GT, let me put in my $0.02 (for what it's worth).
Frankly, I'm a little biased because I don't find what I've seen of the 2010 to be that appealing. I like the current Mustang because of the retro '67-'68 look and the new one seems to be leaning more towards the '69, and those tail-lights (maybe it's just me) sort of look like something off the back of the '71-'73.
Don't get me wrong. It's not that I don't like it...I mean if it were next year, and I didn't already own a Mustang (or the current one got totaled or something) then I might buy the new one, but I don't feel any regret on my recent purchase. Even if the new one had IRS and 400 HP (which it won't, at least not immediately), I would still not feel bad, simply because I know I own the best representative of the current model, which I prefer.
Additionally, there is something to be said for buying the last model year of a current design. There are always a lot of little improvements that the company will make to an existing model, whether it be new option packages or cool stuff that the company doesn't advertise, like the seatbelt extenders, the silver trim on the Shaker 500 *****, the sound-deadening material, the easier shifter, etc. None of this was available on the 2005 or even the 2007.
As far as I'm concerned, you'll be able to get a fabulous deal on the 2008's or even the 2009's (which have the cool 45th Anniversary emblem). I got my new blue GT for almost $8000 under sticker with rebates and fleet pricing. The only issue is whether you'll be able to find the model which has the right colors and options. In my case, I wanted a Vista Blue GT w/ the Premier Trim package. There were two in all of California. I'm now driving one of them!
At the same time, if you're worried about buyer's remorse once the 2010's come out, think about this:
1) The 2010's are not going to have the same options that later years will have. Ford will always add more stuff to keep the car from getting stale.
2) If you buy a 2010 and the Boss or Mach comes out in 2011 (or Ford decides to put IRS on a later model) you're really going to be kicking yourself in a year.
3) If you wait until 2011, there may not be a Boss or Mach. My personal opinion is that Ford is waiting to see what gas prices do, hence no Boss or Mach in 2010. If gas prices in the summer of 2010 are $5.00-$6.00 per gallon (or higher), Ford ain't going to give you the option of buying a Boss or Mach. You're going to see the 4-cylinder Mustang Hybrid!
4) Even if the stars align and we see an amazing 2011 Mach or Boss Mustang with IRS, 400HP, and every technological bell-and-whistle known to man, you're also going to see $2,000-$5,000 dealer markups for the first 6 months, possibly even the first year if the car is really popular. So even then you won't be able to buy one until the end of 2010 or even 2011.
5) Don't forget, there will also probably be mark-ups on the 2010's. So, it may be at least a year until you can buy one of those, and then, if Ford announces a Boss or Mach, you'll want to wait until the 2011's for that (so maybe Fall of 2010), and of course you'll want to wait until you can actually get one for sticker or even get a deal on one (now we're talking Summer or Fall of 2011).
Bottom line...are you willing to realistically wait another 3 years? My suggestion to you is get the best deal you can on a 2008 or 2009, keep it until 2012 or 2013 and then (if the refreshed Mustang still appeals to you) get the last Boss or Mach Mustang on the old platform and that way you'll ensure you get the best deal and the most options on the last of the S197's.
However, if you do get a 2008 or 2009, make sure you get one that has the "Premier Trim" package! This is different from the Interior Upgrade package. You get the wrapped and stitched dashboard, armrests, console lid, aluminum pedals, etc. It is a very, very cool option and it would cost you $2000+ to retrofit it yourself. Trust me on this! It's fairly rare...most dealers in California don't seem to order it much, and you CAN'T get it with the Bullitt or the CS.

From reading all of your helpful comments, I will most likely purchase a '09 GT in late November or December using the X-Plan (along with incentives). I will definitely wait to see the new 2010 unmasked, but I think the savings will be worth having an "older" model. Since I just graduated college this past May, I don't yet have a great accumulation of savings and think it would be unwise to go the 2010 route. Plus, by the time I'm ready to trade in my '09, I can go for the Shelby
.
JCC07: I'll look into the "Premier Trim" package, but I guess I will be at the mercy of the dealer's inventory. Appreciate the thorough response.

For me, I can't imagine the Bullitt on the 2010 style. the current Mustang iteration suits it best, and I'm more than happy I own one.
And let me add this...
Congrats on buying your Bullitt!
I thought very seriously about the Bullitt, but there were 3 factors going against it. First, I really wanted that wrapped and stitched dash and armrests (Premier Trim). I know it's cheesy, but it was something I had to have. Second, I knew that for about $1000-$1500 I could at a later date upgrade my GT to the Bullitt's performance. Third, and most importantly, there were $4000 extra in rebates on the regular GT. That spoke the loudest. Also, I've always really wanted to own a blue car.
But one thing I've really been thinking about the past few days: I don't care if the 2010 Mustang is more plush on the inside, or has more options. The 1969 Mustang was far more luxurious inside than the 1968's, and had more options, but when we look back at 1960's Mustangs, which would you rather own if you had a choice. Some people might claim to want a 1969 Mach 1 or Boss 429, but I think others would be happy with a 1967 or 1968 GT390 fastback. I know I would.

I would have liked if the Premiere trim was at least an option on the Bullitt. I don't really care about heated seats etc, but the wrapped and stitched dash, armrests and glove box lid would have been nice. The Bullitt does get the pedal covers and satin finish shifetr bezel, and shift ball at least.
I don't thik you can duplicate the performance items that make the Bullitt for only $1000 - $1500.
The axle assembly alone would cost more than that. (and it's more than just 3.73 gears)
You have a nice Mustang, and you can't get a Bullitt in Blue!
I'd be very happy with a '67 or '68 GT with a 390 too

Bullitt performance upgrades
I hadn't heard anything about the axle assembly, though I've only been researching this for a couple weeks now. From what I've been able to determine, to upgrade a regular GT to a Bullitt requires the following:
1) Ford Racing Power Pack (includes cold-air intake, exhaust, tuner)
2) Bullitt springs
3) Bullitt shocks
4) Bullitt strut tower brace
5) Bullitt front and back brake pads
6) 3:73 gears
Apparently all of these parts are available for purchase...at least according to Mr. Casey at Clevenger Ford. The question is simply coughing up enough dough to pay for all the mods. This is going to be, shall we say, a long-term project.

List of Bullitt axle upgrades over the base 8.8" GT The following is the complete list of all upgrades for the Bullitt 3.73 axle:
1. Higher strength differential case material
2. 9x13 differential gear tooth combination (GT is 10 x 14)
3. Differential gears receive premium shot peening
4. Anerobic adhesive added between the differential case and ring gear
5. Higher capacity head bearing (with shim)
All other components in the Bullitt axle are common with the base GT 8.8" axle
Also, the axle code is V-257. The code is found on two stickers on the axle. One is on the right axle tube, near the vent cap. The other is on the differential cover.

Your list doesn't include the exhaust system, which is unique from the engine back.
Then of course the non performance items such as seats, steering wheel etc.
Quick Question: Do any of you think Ford will offer a low interest rate option for the Mustang GT within the next few months (up to January or February)? My definition of low is anywhere between 0%-2.9% for a 60 month financing term. Have they done this in the past?
