Question 2009 or 2010?

I do not yet own a mustang, but I will be looking to purchase one anywhere from December (I assume Ford would have a great holiday sale) to April. With that said, I planned on waiting for the 2010 model, but it doesn't seem to depart too much from the 2005-2009 models.

If I can purchase a '09 for considerably less, should I consider it? For example, I was looking at a 2009 Mustang GT CS with an MSRP of $31,300. How much off, assuming you were in my position, would persuade you to purchase a 2009 over a 2010?

Thanks for the time ,
Austin

Hey Austin, you can easily get an X-Plan pin number on another site, and it will save you around $2,000+ on a new GT/CS (can be more depending on options). The X-Plan gets you below invoice, plus you get all incentives that are out there currently, with the exeption of College Grad and a few other private offers. It all depends on what your looking for. If you want the newest thing, I would say, get the 2010. If you want a good deal, get a 2009 model. Just be aware, production for the 2009s will end by the end of the year, and Ford already said, they are making approximately 45,000 cars and thats it. Gonna be a short run. BTW, where you located at? If you need any help with pricing, let me know. I'm the residential car nut who happens to be a sales person as well on the boards. Be glad to help in any way, even if your not local.

Personally I'd wait till November when they unveil the 2010. That way you can get a better comparison, right now it is way too hard to compare them just seeing bits and pieces. Especially when some of the pieces are covered in camo.

If my car were bone stock (or modified to the point where I could remove the few mods I have), I would probably get in line for a 2010 (or for that matter the 2011, when the 5.0 returns). I do like what I see so far.

I do have access to the X-Plan, but I was hoping to talk them down further (If that's possible). I went to a dealership this past week and had $26,500 almost immediately (whether or not he would have really given me that is unknown...although he acted like he could do that). However, since I am not looking to buy before December, I didn't press him much. Instead, I was gathering information so I would have an idea of what to expect when I am ready to buy.

05fordgt: I am located in Houston, but it looks like you're a good deal away...appreciate the offer.

What is this college grad offer about? I'll be graduating right about the time the 2010 will be hitting dealerships. Even though I'm pretty sure these things will be flying out the door at MSRP or above, I'm pretty curious...

If your a current full time student enrolled in a 4 year school or a trade school (I believe. Not in front of the program descriptions), or current graduate, you get an additional $500 off the car. But, this rebate is NOT VALID with any plan sales. Just need a copy of your transcripts (if still in school), or your diploma if you graduated.

About the price above? Was that on the car that stickered for $31,100? And was it a 2009? If you want, I can tell you what your current incentives are, which will tell you if they are on the up and up? In my area, there was $4,000 total on a Mustang recently, and if thats the case in your area, they didn't discount it too much ($4,000 off of $31,100 is $27,100. So they discounted it $600 total. That isn't much of a discount IMO). Let me know your ZIP.

Well ,the dealership I went to was Lone Star Ford (77037). Whether or not I would go with them is unknown, but I assume I really need to disregard the incentives when negotiating. Is the X-Plan + Incentives the way to go? Or do you think I could get a better deal without it.

X-Plan is the easiest thing to use, and is the better way to go. Most dealers won't go under invoice to get rid of Mustangs. The only vehicles that they would do that on, would be trucks and Explorers, as they are sitting like lead sleds.

In your region, you get either a $1,500 or 5.9% APR for 60 months on 2009 models. For 2008s, you get either a total of $2,000 in rebates ($500 of which is Ford Credit money), or you get the same $500 plus a 5.9% APR for 60 months. On top of that, if you currently own a Ford, you get a $2,000 Owner Loyalty rebate.

Yeah...I'm thinking that the X-Plan is definitely the way to go. I sure hope that Ford has some awesome incentives for the Christmas holidays!

I would believe they should, as most dealers won't want to have an over abundance of 2009 models when the new 2010 arrives.

Just remember, you can always send me a PM with your ZIP, so I can forward you the current incentives in your area, when your ready to purchase.

X-Plan is definately the way to go. My '08 GT/CS has pretty much every option in it and it saved $2700 off sticker. No hassles and they were more than happy to do it.

If it's on a lot, Dealer Stock. go for the 09. They will accept X-Plans, or deeply discount, to get rid of it. They need to make room for the 2010's too. Plus, If you can find one that's been arround for a while, in stock, they are paying Interest to the Bank for it just sitting. You may still be able to find an 08. (Those have incentive's) 2010's are nice, but they will get full price, for quite a while after they land.

I'm in basically the same position as A_A. In the next year or so I'll be gearing up to get a new car and I'm about 90% sure it will be a Mustang GT (somewhat considering a G8 GT for the IRS, 4 doors and 6L v8). The big question is would I rather get a 2010, or wait until the 2010 comes out and get a new 2009 or an ultra lightly used 2008 (3k miles or less).

The obvious benefits to the 08 and 09 being cost and availability of custom parts; benefits to the 2010 being new-ness/many wont have it for a while and any potential perks like more horsepower or a twin turbo v6/increased fuel economy.

This will be my first new car (and first car with less than 50k miles when I buy it...) so it's something I've been semi-obsessing over for the last six months or so. I'm only a year out of College so I don't have much extra money to throw around (aside from that being budgeted for the car purchase) so getting the 08/09 is very appealing if I can get it for 20-25k. Is that a realistic price point? I am mostly thinking that the new body updates would drive the price of the 10 way up and the older models way down, as well as a lot of people trading in recently purchased 08's, I just don't know what kind of specific numbers to expect.

On a separate note, I've been browsing these forums for the last few months before registering and I have to say they have been an awesome source of information and educated speculation.

If I were in your shoes, I'd follow Jeff's advice and see if you qualify for the X-plan towards the 2010. IMO, I think you would much rather have the new re-freshed body style anyhow. So why not just get the car that you really want, instead of being disappointed by settling for the current 2009 body style.

Just my $.02

I know i'm off topic here but how would I get an X-plan? My Legacy was recently totaled by the woman and i'm thinking of either buying another Legacy or perhaps a Fusion if the price is right. I bet a loaded Fusion with the X-plan would be cheaper than buying another Subie.......
