1st oil change thoughts..

Hey all,

I am coming upon 1,000 miles and wondering if anyone else thinks its a good idea to change my oil at this time or if I should wait?

My gut tells me to do it, but my mechanical experience tells me it isn't of much benefit and I can safely go to 3,000 or even wait until the oil life minder tells me.

What do you all do?

Also, when is a good time to change the manual transmission fluid out? What is a good fluid to use?

I'm looking forward to getting some input.

Thanks!

I've done 1,000 and 2,000 now on my last two new Mustangs.

This has been debated many times before here and honestly 1,000-3,000 is all good. Whatever makes you sleep better at night.

I changed mine at 1,000 miles on my 2012 GT. I'm sure you can wait, but I wanted to get the original oil out and some new oil in. Just my preference. Obviously, it isn't going to hurt anything to change it.

I'm not sure about the transmission fluid. I don't know if Ford voids your warranty if you use something other than what they recommend. If you're having any notchy shifting issues, you might ask your dealership about the XL-18 additive that's being added to the 2014s.

You should be okay running it for 5000 miles.

I dump oil on all my new engines to look for metal in the pan and filter at 400 - 500 miles. If all looks good, I'll run the next pan full for a long time.

Thanks for the info everyone. I'll probably change it next weekend.

But if anyone has more info on this XL-18 additive? Is it something that is factory added on the 2014s? Or is it dealer added per a TSB? If it's not already in my trans I'll pick up a bottle.

Changed mine around 10,000 miles, just as Ford (the company that makes the car) recommended. No sooner, no later.

My car now has 23,000 miles on it and has the oil changed TWICE since leaving the assembly plant.

JUST - LIKE - THE -MANUFACTURER - STATES - I -SHOULD

I have about 4,170 on mine and I'm still on the original oil fill. I'm going to change mine at 5,000 miles and then probably go with the OLM which probably will actually be once a year since this is just a recreational vehicle which doesn't get driven all of the time.

I see nothing wrong with 10,000 mile oil change intervals. Engines are built to tighter tolerances today than ever before and with much higher quality.

That being said, I will probably not ever exceed 5,000 miles and I do believe an earlier initial oil change is beneficial.

The manufacturer is pushing 10k oil changes because the average consumer wants to do as little maintenance as possible. Toyota tried doing longer duration oil change frequencies and ended up buying a butt load of engines because they had a sludge problem. I don't see Ford running into this, but it

I've seen people religiously change their oil every 3k and it comes out of the car just as golden as it was when it went in. At 10k, the oil is dirty but that is not a bad thing, its doing it's job.

The mileage part never confused me... It's the 3k or "three months" whatever comes first that confuses me.

Is oil like milk, does it spoil or is that just a monthly average of when most reach 3k?

+1...

I think anything mechanical can be luck of the draw as far as longevity goes. But I am not comfortable with taking any chances... Besides... I always get my first Oil change free at the dealership I buy from, and I buy their service plan. That way I "Want" to get the oil changed @ 5000 miles (Paid for that plan vs. the 7500 mile plan per each oil change) like clock work as I get new blades if needed, new brake pads if needed and tires rotated each time with no cost to me (well, beyond what I paid for at delivery for that service lol). Oh! And they wash the exterior for me as well =]

As long as you don't do it before break-in is up I don't see why it would hurt anything. It's up to the owner you bought do what you want with it. I've done it at 1500 mi. On my '12 & '14 MCA V6.

I changed mine at 300 miles. Am now at 7k or so, more than 2 years later... Had 3 other oil changes between them.

Break in? You mean I was supposed to break this thing in? How do they expect me to do that when it's so much fun?

Hey RubyRedMCA_Beast,

As you already know, your Mustang's message center will alert you when an oil change is required based on your driving habits. It can be up to a year or up to 10,000 miles. You can click the SETUP button to see how much oil life you have remaining. This information can be viewed in your Owner's Manual (3rd Printing). There is no such thing as too many oil changes, however I know many people do the first one a little early due to “break in”. It’s really up to you. I always recommend speaking your servicing Ford Dealer first.

Regarding your transmission fluid, it should be checked and, if required, added by
an authorized dealer. Do not use supplemental transmission fluid additives, treatments or cleaning agents. The use of these materials may affect transmission operation and result in damage to internal transmission components. Use only fluid that meets Ford specifications. Refer to Maintenance product specifications and capacities in your Owner's Manual.

Hi Deysha,

Ive finally been home long enough to get mine up to 3600 miles. Now it gets to enjoy a 3 week nap because I wont have time for it.

When you say "10K - or- a year" Does that monitor litterally know when a year is up?

Mine was built in Jan `13, Delivered to the dealer in March `13, Purchased in early Aug `13 w/221 miles and now in December Its up to 3600.

If it isnt set to go off automatically at a year, Is that year up for me in January, March, or Aug ?

I run Pennzoil Ultra 5-20W in my car. I've sent the oil in to Blackstone to be tested at my last oil change. 9,924 miles on the oil and according to Blackstone I could have squeezed another 6,000 miles out of it. Based on the testing of the oil I would say that the 10,000 mile recommendation is quite safe, conservative even.

If you go off what the Message Center tells you it will be 10,000 miles every single time.

I can assure you the car does NOT monitor the quality of the oil or how your driving habits can alter it. You can run the oil to 10,000 miles, let the Message Center tell you the oil change is required, reset the counter and the car believes the oil has been changed. It will reset to 100% and start counting out the next 10,000 miles like the oil was brand new.

I don't know if it keeps track of time, so I don't know if it will alert you after a year regardless of the miles driven, but I do know for certain that it's just counting down miles with total disregard to the quality of oil in the motor. I know this because I reset mine at 7,000 miles without changing the oil. With the factory oil still in it the counter reset to 100% and started the 10,000 mile countdown. 3,000 miles later when I did change the oil it was at the expected 70% and continued the countdown at the exact same rate as before the oil change.
