Do when do you guys recommend getting the first oil changed in the car? I have about 2400 miles on mine right now, was wondering if I should get it changed before the 5k mark or not?

I got my 2014 GT in April 2013, currently have 4255 miles on it. Haven't changed oil/filter yet. Planning on changing it at 5000 then every 5000 miles after that. Won't drive it much this winter so it'll get changed in the spring which will also get rid of the winter moisture and contaminates. Might not be the answer your looking for and I am sure you will get many opinions..to each their own. In the old days I did the first oil change at 500 miles, then every 2500 miles (saved my engines for the next owner). Today's motors and castings are built much better, run and rings seated before it ever leaves the plant. No such thing as "break-in oil" like there used to be. Correct answer is whatever you are most comfortable doing. My 2 cents.

I would go for closer to 5k if your car hasn't burned a ton.

Yep, first oil change between 2 and 2,500 miles. Perfect. Its good to get those newly metal shavings out.

I did an initial oil change at 450 miles, then another at 5200 just recently. I'm going to send out the oil from my last change for analysis this weekend and will post results. 5k is probably conservative for daily driven car.

I did my initial oil change around 2300 miles and the second one around 5000 miles. 7500 miles after that for each interval. . Unless I'm mistaken I was under the impression it was good to change the first oil under 3,000 miles in order to remove all those metal shavings in the oil and filter.

I didn't think there are metal shavings so much anymore. If it was then Ford would be ruining the motors with their 7500 first oil change.

Doubt there is much, but it was peace of mind for me. Plus I got M1 5w50 for about $5/qt, so minimal overall cost for a change. And I run the car hard in the summer. Did not want to be on original oil when I brought her out for some hard miles

True, I changed mine at 1700 miles because I was going to a track day. Wonder if it would be any different had I waited till 3k or more.

There is always some wear/break-in metallic bits get into the oil on a new engine, a lot less though on new technology engines than there was on old school motors with flat tappet cams.

And I don't recall right off what the manual says for Track Pack cars, but on regular GT's, ford says you might get 10K before the first oil change, or whenever the oil change warning message comes up, whichever comes first.

Personally, I changed to full synthetic on mine at about 1K.

I bought my 14 GT in August and I'm at about 4,200 miles and still running the FF oil. Since the weather has been crappy here, I have not been driving the car at all. I had planned on changing at 5,000 miles but will probably change next month when my car will be a year old.

Dumped it after 350? I ran my stock factory fill in my Boss to over 6500 miles, and have burned any oil after switching to Royal Purple. I took the cheese on a Pep Boys sale with filter, only to realize the blend I bought wasn't a full synthetic like Amsoil. Will be switching to Amsoil next fill.

Anyone who dumps their factory fill under 1k mile is just wasting money, IMHO. This 'metal shavings' urban legend lives on. THERE ARE NO METAL SHAVINGS. There are trace contaminants left over from the factory, that's about it. How do I know? I had my oil analyzed by OAI since new, 1 Motorcrap, 1 Royal Purple. I expect my next RP analysis to yield results similar to the first, sub-standard to Amsoil.

Bottom line, if you want to waste your money changing your oil too soon, knock yourself out. These new engines aren't your Dad's old 350 Chevy, 340 Mopar, or 351 Windsor.

Yepper. For me, I don't care if there's shavings or no shavings etc. I have switched to Amsoil within first 500 miles on all my cars for past how many years. I'm a firm believer in Amsoil, and don't care if the stock oil is good for umpteen thousand miles. Just personal preference.

I'd like to see how trace metals = metal shavings? Show me one contaminated filter or an oil pan that has metal shavings in it from a new Coyote/Roadrunner. Oil Analyzers Inc can produce reports that are measured in parts per million. I wonder if any of the these 'trace metals' are even visible to the naked eye?

Any oil analysis will show trace metals, regardless of the engine, oil, or number of miles on it. As long as you have two metal parts rubbing together there will be trace metal in the oil. It's impossible to eliminate friction entirely.


But metal traces is FAR different from damaging metal shavings. Finding 5 parts of copper per million parts of oil isn't going to cause you any problems, and doesn't indicate anything other than normal engine wear.
