Sounds to me like the OP may be pushing down (like shifting to reverse) on the shift **** enough for it to open the gate for reverse and catching the notch. I did that a couple times before I realized what was happening. I tried holding the shifter below the **** for a bit and all was well. Just a learning curve for me.
You may be right, I have never owned a performance manual vehicle. On a ford focus you dont shift gears at max RPM, so I probably just have to try some of the tricks in this thread.

I am having trouble with the 1st to 2nd shift under load. I have noticed that it, for whatever reason, gets stuck in the notch for reverse. It does not go into reverse of course, but the shifter sticks right in between the two gears. I have absolutely no issue shifting into any other gear under load. Does anyone have any tips or tricks for this?
I recommend you pay your service department a visit and show them what you’re experiencing with your shifter to make sure there is nothing going on. If you need further assistance, don’t hesitate to PM me.

I was having the problem where the shifter would way to easily slide into reverse when shifting into first at at stop. When I installed the MGW it was apparent the plastic protrustion on the shifter was worn by the sharp edges on the metal detent of the stock shifter body. You might be experiencing a similar problem due to wear.
