$1200 for 5 year/60k extended warranty - Yay or Nay?

What do you guys think, is it worth paying $1200 for the 5 year/60k extended warranty? If it was a Honda/Toyota econobox I'd say no. Since it's a sports car, I'm leaning more towards getting the warranty. I plan to sell the car sometime between 3-5 years of ownership. I only drive about 6,000 miles per year so I'd hit the year limit before the mileage. It seems like the warranty would be a good selling point to any prospective buyers. Thoughts?

Make sure it's transferable....

Read the fine print on what's covered and if there is a deductible.

Went with one on my '05 GT, never really had to use it... the dealer replaced a couple bulbs and shifter boot a no cost, the parking brake cable covering was done to a recall or TSB...

Definitely. Ford warranty only. None of those shady dealer/aftermarket warranties.

Do you plan to mod it?

If so, might as well leave the warranty on the table.

And as far as resale value, it won't get you much.

Screw warranties. Not worth the paper they're written on. Enjoy you car. The factory warranty is good enough.

They have a 7YR/60K warranty also. I don't put lots of miles on and plan on hitting years before miles if I have it that long. Cost me $1600 ...

do not do it; you are paying $1200 for a 2 year warranty - the first 3 years you already paid for when you bought the car; i doubt that you will have a $1200 expense in those two years. read consumer magazines - the odds are against you. If you are concerned then put $1200 into a savings account and if you do not spend it use it towards your next car's down payment.

Remember these factory warranties are negotiable!! Don't spend $1200 on this. Ford was wanting $900 for an extended warranty on my Ranger FX4 & I said no way. They finally came down to $450! I sold that truck & recently bought a Tacoma. It was the same thing-Toyota wanted $1500 or so for a 7yr/75k $0 deductible warranty. I found a couple dealerships willing to seel it for $600, which is what I did. Shop around & don't settle for the high price they quote!

you have a 5/60 powertrain warranty which will cover the expensive stuff. 1200 bucks is a lot of cash to fix an alternator or something like that outside the scope of the powertrain warranty.

Yeah. Plus I'd rather void my warranty and mod my car then stress about crap for 5 years.

It's amazing how much the powertrain won't cover however The harmonic balancer went out on my Ranger & destroyed the crank sensor in the process. It was a $550+ bill and the powertrain didn't cover any of it, even though these components are connected to the engine assembly.. I was pretty pissed to say the least because I could have gotten a warranty that would have covered this for $500! These warranties really are gambles because I never had anything go wrong with my 97 Ranger that I sold after 10 years of reliable service.

What I'm saying is that these warranties are available for much less! Shop around & see what you can find. I'm checking with the Toyota dealer I bought my Tacoma warranty through to see if they can help us Mustang owners too. I believe they sell multiple vehicle lines & might have a hookup on the Ford warranties also.

I wouldn't do it.

Look at the things this way: first 3 years the car is covered by factory warranty anyway. After those 3 years you will know whether you bought a good car or a lemon. If it's a lemon, you can always purchase additional 2 year warranty then.

Okay, hopefully, it's okay with the mods to post this info. If not, please delete.

This is the email I received back from Troy. You can contact him at TDietrich@fd-warranty.com or
Phone - (413) 772-0231 (Dealership)
Phone - (413) 772-0989 (My direct line).
Fax - (413) 774-2247

His work address is below, but they do have a Ford dealership.

Toyota of Greenfield
1 Main Street
Greenfield, MA 01301

Hi Matt,

Sure, we also have a Ford dealership...so I can also do the Ford ESP plans at a discount. Although the Ford plans do tend to be a bit more expensive than the Toyota ones.

On a Mustang (2007 or newer), it would run $984.00 for a 7 yr / 75K, or $1089.00 for a 7 yr / 100K PremiumCARE plan...that's with the standard $100 deductible, plus you'd have to add a $100 surcharge if it's beyond 12 mos / 12,000 miles from it's original purchase date.
There's just a $150.00 surcharge on any models equipped with turbo or superchargers...so that would apply in the case of a GT500.

Troy

I agree. You don't have to buy it now, wait a couple of years.

By the time you get that and all the other silly stuff that they try to sell to you, who knows what you would be paying for a 2011 Mustang?

I just checked online prices ... Wow! I'm going to the dealer Saturday and cancelling my ESP. If they want to keep their commission I'll let them cut me a check for the difference of what they charged me vs. what I found online.

I got a 7yr/75K miles for $1045 for '10 GT. The selling dealer wasn't even close to matching the price. It is a Ford ESP Premium Care Warranty. I have a $50 deductible.

Adam, that sounds REALLY high? Its for a 2010 Mustang GT correct? Ford ESP Premium Care? If so, that dealer maked it up WAY TOO HIGH!! Let me know and I'll get you the REAL retail cost on it.

This is why I offer FORD ESPs at a discount to fellow TMS members. If anyone wants a price, let me know.

My dealer is Scum. I checked my Paper Work ... he said it was a B-2-B Warranty 72/75K with a $100 Deuctible. They charged me $1653. Now I see on my Paperwork it is the Extra Care plan not Premium Care. My fault for not doublechecking but I ASSuMEd he was selling me what I asked for. So I paid $1653 .. Online price is $725. I'm going in Saturday since I still have 5 more days to cancel (within 30 days) and chat with the finance guy. They can either Bump me up to $0 Deductible PremiumCare for 72/75K and keep some profit or Cancel my policy completely and lose all their profit.

Everyone needs to remember that 99.9% of dealers are TOTAL SCUM. Just because a few "nice" dealers are here means squat. Trust NOTHING that you hear out of a dealers mouth without prior research.
