1 - 4 upshift on 6 speed manual
I searched this topic, but didn't find anything.
I have a 2012 Mustang GT wiith 6 speed manual. One feature about the transmission is that it will "decide" to go from 1st to 4th unexpectedly. The owner's manual states that it does this to conserve fuel.
If I wanted an automatic, I would have bought one. L.O.L.! I checked the message center to see if there is a way to deselect that feature. I didn't see it, so I read the owner's manual. There is no mention of how to override the 1 - 4 shift.
Have any of you figured a way to disable this feature? I'd really appreciate your help on this because it annoys the f&#@ out of me.
Thanks!

this is really true??? i would poop my pants thinking there are little shifting monkeys in the transmission doing the work for me if it went from 1 to 4th... or i would think dealer accidentally put in AT lol ... i didn't think this was even possible on a MT

skip shift was abig feature when the 2011s came out. search skip shift and you will find a ton of info on it. its not that big of a deal. I do hate it tho.
also. it doesnt shift for you. it blocks 3rd(maybe its 2nd) gear to make you go into 4th.

Holy crap that's nuts! So you're saying you can be in 1st, then try and shift to 2nd and it won't let you, you have no choice but to go into 4th??? That's a safety hazard if I ever heard one.

It'll attempt to block out 2nd. Before I disconnected the solenoid I would try to shift into 2nd, it would block and I would try again and it would go into 2nd.
It's annoyning, but easily by-passed.

It's funny that this topic was just brought up because I was talking with my boss at work yesterday about how corvettes do the same thing. I'd definitely disable it if you can. You bought a manual transmission so you could control when and how you shift. haha

Thanks to all for the replies.
I searched and found how to do it. The link below has a post by a Mustang owner who photographed the solenoid after he disconnected it along with his tips for keeping the connector clean and using a zip tie to secure the connector and wire once disconnected. The photo shows the transmission oil fill plug just below the solenoid on the passenger side of the transmission. The photo was easier to comprehend than the PDF file from the Ford repair manual. The hardest part will be getting underneath the car to access the part.

I'll follow up after I complete the process.

My '12 with the 3.73's apparently has it, but it has never forced me into 4th. I have seen the light on the dash, but just go into second anyways. Maybe it was something to do with my MGW shifter?

As a side note:
There is an informational thread here on TMS about Skip Shift and what triggeres it, but no mention of how to disconnect it. I didn't know the feature had this name Skip Shift until Lewis26 answered above.
Some owners adjust their driving style to not have Skip Shift engage. I can't always rev it sufficiently in stop and go traffic, and I don't want to have to think about it. When the Skip Shift kicks in, it's feels to me like I missed a shift. If I want to shift from 1st to 4th, I want it to be my decision, not the car's. It's not a feature that I can grin and bear. It's totally unacceptable and MUST be disconnected. I'll time it and let all of you know how much time it took to get the job done.

Guys, I'm a bit surprised so many of you are so surprised by this feature. It was used on the Camaro/Firebird way back in the early 2000's before they were discontinued, and has been on Corvettes for at least that long too. It's a way for manufacturers to eek every possible MPG out of an engine for CAFE purposes, as well as making all of us feel better about the car we're buying . Also may help avoid gas guzzler taxes, like the one buyers of the Camaro ZL-1 will have to pay, but buyers of the '13 GT-500 won't.
Even if you don't disconnect it, it's not that big a deal, and it's certainly not a safety hazard as somebody said above. It only activates if you are at a certain speed in 1st gear and have the throttle in a certain position. In 14,000 miles of driving my '11 GT, I think it's activated less than 10 times on me. And I don't drive WOT that much - my overall MPG is 21 with it.

There are times where I dislike it, and there are times where I appreciate it. It's love and hate. It's what basically justifies the car from a business standpoint @ Ford corporate so that's one thing to appreciate.
