Why does Tungsten grey change so much?

Depending on the surrounding light (or lack thereof), our Tungsten grey Gt appears several different colors. Sometimes, it appears almost pale lavender-silver, especially at sunset. Yesterday, had to back her out of the garage and the sky was overcast - like it was going to snow - the car looked milky silver. It broad daylight, the grey appears much darker. Is there pearl or something in the paint? I like it, but it is strange.

It's the metallic flake paint. Pearlescent paint does the same thing. If you go with a regular clearcoat paint like black, white, or orange, it looks very flat. My Vista Blue looks less purple than my Crown Vic's Deep Wedgewood Blue under the sunlight.

There were threads a long time ago which discussed this, and there were a couple of posts which gave the breakdown of the colors in the overall color--and there are all kinds: whites, purples, silvers, black, etc. I may have the "ingredients" written down somewhere.

If I look reeeaaaally close at mine on sunny days, I swear I can see flecks of pink and blue in there.

I love it!

I love the metallic paints! In certain lighting conditions, my Vista Blue gives off a purple hue. I've never been able to capture it in any pictures yet.

How it changes color depending on the lighting always got me. Weather and time of day seem to dramatically change how it looks. It was always more purple on bright, overcast days with a lot of glare or in strong direct sunlight. In shade it looked silver, and early in the morning it looked blue.

But one thing I've seen is that the car has changed color...over time. I threw together a collection of various pictures i've taken in the last 2 years I've had the car:

2006

This first set is all 2006. The upper left pic is the day after I picked up the car, 3/17/2006. It looks more purple than grey. I remember thinking that I thought my color choices were between medium silver and dark metallic blue, not between pale lavender and blue, which got me wishing I ordered Vista that morning. the next one was taken that summer, and I remember deliberately parking in the shade to hide the purple, but you can see where the sun is hitting it, the purple is still there. The next two were Fall, ans on the 11/28/2007 pic you can see more purple, but its definitely less obvious. The last two, the purple is mostly indistinguishable.

2007

The next set is from 2007. 1/13/2007 pic looks almost exactly like the Titanium Silver color that was on the 2005 show car (so maybe it is the same color after all). From then on, the purple is amost completely gone and depending on the lighting is either silver (7/21/2007 pic) to something like blue steel (6/6 or 9/8 pics). Now THIS is the color I ordered.

Maybe it has something to do with the paint curing over the years, or the fact that its not garage kept and the sun faded the pinkish/purple hues . On cloudy, damp, or gloomy days it looks more purple than normal but barely. Either way, I still think its the best color for the '05's, especially now.

I ordered tungsten on my 06 GT in 2005. I had not seen one in person and when I did see a V6 at a local dealer before mine came in I sorta freaked out.....I thought it was purple. I started a thread way back then and started a TMS panic. I actually called my dealer and changed the color to satin silver. Luckily I saw a few more tungstens that week and and noticed how the color changed and decided I wanted it after all. So I called my dealer back and changed it back to tungsten. I'm sure glad I did. If I was doing it all over again today I'd probably still go with tungsten (if Ford still offered tungsten) or alloy or vapor.

I like the look of Tungsten and how it does change its appearance based upon lighting. I still get a lot of compliments on the color to this day.

I'm not certain what color I would have ordered if Tungsten wasn't available back in '06.
