Just a final thought on this forum. I drove this car for the first time with the new Handle today and I noticed the COLD METAL feel of it vs The PLASTIC FEEL of the old and it reminded me of my 68 Cougar that had a Metal Shifter when I was a teen. Its an added bonus it just reminds me more of a HIGH PERFORMANCE car. Hard to explain but it FEELS Better.

There are two ways to go on this! Just the Shifter **** or the complete Shifter assy! The assy really is not a big bang for the buck! If you need a little more silver at the base take off the surround bezel and spray it with some Argent wheel Paint it will have the same sheen as the shifter! I realize on the IUP Shifter the Silver is on the Quadrant but painting the bezel would have the same effect. The **** is $90.00 U.S. I hope 170.00 is not just the ****! I think they have may quoted you for a COMPLETE Shifter!

Ill have to check that out. I quoted them the part # that was posted earlier in this thread. Im not sure if it was for the whole assymbley. I would only want the shifter itslef anyway. Im considering installing the console piece from woodview so I think it would look better if that surround piece was black....Again...Thanks

Where did you order the door handles?

I would definitley like to see the install pics. I'd rather do it myself than spend $100 on labor.

Bad News guys, according to the latest Ford parts catalog, you can only get the shifter as an assembly  . The handle is no longer available separately.

Hello all,

It is a Quick & easy deal to upgrade to the IUP Shift **** from the standard ****! All you need is a small to medium bit phillips screw driver and possibly some needle nose pliers.

1. Purchase one #4r3z7213da Automatic Shift ****. It will cost you about $90.00 with tax.
2. Get your keys and tools and head out to the car.
3. Turn on the ignition Do not start and take the car out of park.
4. Set hand brake.
5. Turn Key off.
6. Pull shifter down to first.
7. On the front of the shifter you will find your phillips screw, loosen and remove it.
8. Put car in Drive and lift slowly on the **** You will find the overdrive wiring COILED around the shift shaft Rotate until free.
9. Unplug the overdrive wiring gently pulling strait up. You may want to use the needle nose pliers. I did not need them.
10.Unpack your upgrade **** and scrape off the scotch tape holding the screw in the new ****!
11. Reverse the steps for install.
Hint 1. Do not overcoil the overdrive wiring it needs a little slack
Hint 2. Check the overdrive light in the Dash cycling the O/D switch With key on.
Hint 3. Check for free shifter operation if it feels like its binding loosen screw and wiggle the shift **** then retighten!

It took me about five Minutes to do this and ten Minutes to type the instructions!

If you are doing the upgraded steering wheel I would be interested in a step by step on that. I am considering adding the upgraded steering wheel to mine. Thx

I noticed that only the shifter **** is upgraded in this guide. Is there a reason why you didn't upgrade the plate that surrounds it as well? Is it a more complicated/expensive upgrade?

At this time the Shifter bezel is not serviced separately it comes with a complete shifter and is fairly expensive. It is possible at some point it may be available bezel only. Since starting these upgrades I have decided to sell the IUP pieces on the internet to TMS members. I will be stocking most of the items in all colors and also some of the Genuine Accessories.

Thanks for the info, I was just looking at the latest update of CPD, and that was what it showed. Glad to be incorrect on this one!

I really appreciate your posts KC. I need to do a ton of upgrades to my stang. I bought it off the lot, stock, and I mean, bare! But I love it anyway.

I really wish I could tell people that they can safely remove their airbag to install the IUP steering wheel but I can't ! If Safety protocalls are not observed The Air Bag could Deploy! Even if it was only a one in a Million chance I just could not say it! PLEASE PLEASE get a Qualified Person to do any kind of Airbag Work and that Means those Seats with Airbags TOO! Be Aware they are Dangerous! I have access to all the service information and I did not and would not pull my own airbag! It is just not worth the Risk!

This is great information.

I was concerned about the slider scratching the handle over time, this shows how easy it is to replace the handle if it comes time to replace it.

Thanks for the pictures! If only the service manuals were this clear!
Thanks!

Getting all this information out clearly is a bit of work. I just swapped to the IUP interior handles and it's kind of a pain to do. I took twenty pics and I can do a similar post if anybody is interested? If not I may just post the before and afters! Its up to the members. Anybody interested?

Woah...I never thouht of that...I was going to replace my plastic one with the metal - but man, I can imagine the feel of that HOT METAL after a day in the FL sun! Especially with no tinted windows and all black. I better stick to plastic.

I installed the "metal" shifter in mine and it is NOT really metal, it as a thick silver finish that just looks like metal... I also live in Fl and am glad I upgraded. I also installed the upgraded steering wheel and sill plates. I say ..Go for it!
