TURNING TURBO: LEFTLANE SAMPLES FORD’S NEW ECOBOOST FOUR-CYLINDER TURBOS

http://www.leftlanenews.com/turning-...er-turbos.html

In the Mondeo, the 2.0-liter unit puts out 237 horsepower and a broad torque curve that delivers its peak 250 lb-ft. from just 1,750 rpm all the way through 4,500 rpm. It emits 170 g/km of CO2 in Europe’s strict testing, which would equate to somewhere around 35-37 mpg on the highway in North America.

That makes it less powerful but probably a little more efficient than the 274-horse, 269 lb-ft. of torque 2.0-liter you’ll find under the hood of chief rival Hyundai’s Sonata 2.0T.

The difference is in the Mondeo’s totally refined package. Ford has carefully engineered the motor to deliver smooth and quiet response that makes drivers wonder if they’re behind the wheel of a torquey V6 rather than a turbo four. Throw memories of that old 1980s Saab 900 Turbo out the window because this high compression engine utilizes a low intertia turbocharger that spins at 195,000 rpm to produce 16 psi of boost. If you’re keeping track, the Mondeo’s 2.0-liter is a higher compression unit that doesn’t need quite as much boost.

The result is an impeccable feel on the road that certainly gives the faster Sonata a run for the money simply for the way it delivers its power.

And that is why I keep saying that GM does not yet have an answer for EcoBoost. That power rating gives up a bit to the Sonata but it also delivers a roughly (est) 35-37mpg highway rating US in a larger, heavier car. For comparison the turbo Hyundai nets 33mpg highway and the turbo Regal knocks down 30mpg highway, the latter with power output roughly on par with the Ford. Put more simply, the Regal more or less combines the lower power output of the Ford with the lower mileage rating of the Hyundai. Brands like Ford, Hyundai, and VW are leading the way relative to turbo engine development.

I would love to see a Fusion/Mondeo lineup with a base naturally aspirated four, topped by a turbo four like this one that nets highway fuel economy in the mid to high 30's while providing the power and feel of a good 3.0L V-6, topped by a n/a 3.7L V-6 that still nets something like 30mpg highway while providing 300 horses or more for a more performance oriented feel.

I'd like a Egoboost 4 as a mid-range motor that is topped off by a V6. While four bangers can be squeezed to produce similar power the a larger NA V6, they nonetheless loose significantly in terms of smoothness, refinement and sophistication.

I'd slip BMW into that list as well.

I think I'm gonna wait for some time before buying anything EcoBoost from Ford.
It's a brand new technology (at least in Ford's vehicles).
I would rather have a 3.0L Fusion than 2.0L EcoBoost Fusion.
