Speculation for 2008: Ford and Chrysler to merge?
Personally, I think this is a bullsh*t story with no credibility to it whatsoever, and that Autoblog extracted one little sentence, latched onto it, and called it news, but read for yourself and see what you think.
Bad idea all the way around, if there IS any credibility to it.

Ford:
Doesn't need the extra personell/capacity (they've been downsizing)
Doesn't need the cars (except for the Wrangler they have models in every Chrysler segment)
Doesn't need the financial issues (they have plenty)
Would like less competition (conquest sales!)
Yeah, its Bull. Like I said, wait for the asset sale and buy the Jeep name, leave the rest for history.

Shelby Mustang - I presume you mean GT500 - will compete against Challenger SRT-8...if Chrysler lives long enough to build one, that is.

It would be an interesting merger, and it does make some sense. The big 3 are all hurting, they either have to start to work together or they may all be gone soon enough.

Minivans are a dissappearing segment in he face of the CUV onslaught, their 300/Charger competitor is in testing right now and will be on the road sooner rather than later (at which point those two will be the dinosaurs of the market), and as has been said a million other places: Ford doesn't need a Halo car until after they're back in the black, let alone a poorly-implemented Cobra tribute band of a car.

What car is Ford testing that will compete with 300 and Charger? Interceptor? I don't think Ford made any news about Interceptor official.

I'm sure that Cerberus is desparate to get rid of Crapster.
Rumors are that they were clueless as to what they got themselves into taking Crapster from Mercedes. If you look at the "sale", Mercedes essentually paid Cerberus to take Crapster. It has to be total panic at Cerberus right now as a couple weeks ago their CEO said that Crapster is "operationally bankrupt".
If I was running Ford, I'd set the price at $50B.
That is, Cerberus would have to pay Ford $50B to take it over.
A more likely scenario is a Chinese auto company taking over Crapster in order to instantaneously get a distribution & dealer network in N. America.

That's the part of Jeep that I want too! I really like the new 4 door Wrangler and I don't know if I could get myself to buy one if Chrysler still owns Jeep when I'm ready to decide. Granted it'll be a couple years before I can do it.
