Ok, I did a search on "Cougar" prior to posting this. I stopped after going back to Nov 04 and didn't see this topic specifically covered.
Darn, I guess I can't edit my syntax problems in the poll after posting. Sorry.

Absolutely. I would like to see a nice looking Cougar based on the stang...maybe a softer suspension, same engine, and more refined. I would not buy it mind you. I would stick with the Mustang that I love, but I think it would be a good alternative for some.

Sorry, no, I don't see it. What would a LM version of the Mustang bring to the party? More chrome, maybe some fake wood for the interior and a higher price tag. Now if you mean Ford should use the retro-modern formula that worked so well on the Mustang to create a new stand alone Cougar, that would be something to see. Won't happen of course. I say don't water down the Mustang by re-badging it for LM, there is no fan base for such a car. IMHO of course. -_-

If they get it right it will sell to a different set of customers. It would compete against the 3 series BMW except with v8 power standard. (Classic Cougars didn't have 6's).
Did you know that the K code was the only V8 (271hp 289 4V solid lifter) that wasn't also sold in the Cougar?
Did you know that the 427 was the only V8 that you could get in the Cougar and never in a Mustang (Yes Shelby built 1 if you want to count it). (There were only two Boss 429 Cougars though to be honest though)
Here is a 68 Cougar GTE with 427 Side oiler

No love for the Capri so far. I guess Evil Capri hasn't seen this poll yet

Given a choice between the two . . . I would rather see a Cougar.

And here is a 68 XR7-G with the 428CJ. It was built on the same line as the GT500KR and shares the entire drive line....

I think Mercury is more in line for a Euro-Spec Focus Vert or RX8 based model. I know the cougar would be sweet, but with the way Mercury is headed with their styling a G35 fighter would be more up their alley than a musclecar.
Sure, it could be based off the Mustang, but I would prefer looks more in line with their current line of thinking, and a muscle car is not in that deck of cards.
A cool, high output V6 or moderate V8 in a very stylish shell would be the best in my opinion.
Think about how cool a hardtop vert would be based off the Euro-Focus. They already green-lighted a Volvo version of this hardtop so I think it would be cool to give one to merc.
Also, since the new gen Focus hasn't made it here yet, (other than S40 and Mazda3) The similarities wouldnt be too noticeable to the regular Ford Focus...
A hardtop vert, high output v6 or s/c 4 banger on that small of a body would sweet with merc's current design theme....

I know, I know . . .but it would hard to capture the visual dynamics of a 1986 Capri 5.0 . . . . . .

i am a proud owner of an 86 Capri 5.0 that i love however the name just isnt there, i think cougar is a stronger name than capri in my opinion, although it will never change my love for my capri but im just not a big fan of the name.
