Ford's EcoBoost three-cylinder could grow to 1.5L, 200hp

“We have a maximum capacity per cylinder of 500cc, so a 1.5-litre engine is certainly possible,” Fraser told AutoExpress. “In growing markets there are incentives for certain sizes of engines, so in Brazil they want a 1.0-litre engine, in India it’s 1.2 and in China it’s 1.5 – the EcoBoost engine could be all of those.”

The upsized motors could potentially produce up to 200 horsepower, Fraser said. The 1.0L makes up to 123 horsepower in production form, and can be pushed up to 145 horsepower with an inexpensive aftermarket ECU remap.

I read somewhere that 1.0L EcoBoost can be pushed to 180 hp, if Ford chooses to.

Considering that the 4-cylinder in the Rally Fiesta that Ken Block drives puts down about 650 hp at the wheels (all 4 wheels ), I'm pretty sure a turbocharged 3-cyl could easily put out more than 200 hp if the manufacturer really wanted it to.

Yes, there are durability concerns for a production engine, but 200 is pretty easy these days from ANY turbo engine, 3-cylinders or more ...
