To research and showcase the possibilities of the tech, Ford has teamed up with German supplier Schaeffler to create a prototype vehicle called the Fiesta eWheelDrive that uses a pair of electric motors mounted within the assemblies of the rear wheels.
As Ford points out, in-wheel electric motors have several key benefits. Because the motor, brakes and cooling system are all housed within the wheels, the setup doesn’t rob interior space like a traditional electric driveline, allowing for extra passenger/cargo room or more battery capacity.
Due to the absence of mechanical drive components mounted outside the wheel assembly, the technology could also potentially enable the wheels to turn at a nearly 90-degree angle – making city parking a snap.

I worked on a solar car in college and we (along with much of the competition) used an in-wheel electric motor. Cool to see it's getting closer to something a consumer might buy.
