Escape, Explorer Boost Ford Motor Company Sales to 207,759, Up 7 Percent

Ford and Lincoln’s compact utility and sportutilityvehicles helped boost the company’s June 2012 sales to 207,759 sales, up 7.0 percent from June 2011. The increase was thanks to both Ford and Lincoln brands: the former jumped 7.2 percent to 200,215 sales, while the latter edged up 2.5 percent to 7544 sales.
We’ve collected a few of the major winners and losers:
Winners: Ford SUVs and Trucks
Ford’s June success can be mostly attributed to the success of its sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks. The perennial leader in sales volume, the Ford F-Series pickup, jumped 10.9 percent last month to 55,025 sales. Elsewhere in the Ford fleet, the newly redesigned EscapeCUV sold 28,500 units, up 28 percent from June 2011 (this includes 2012 and 2013 models leaving dealer lots), the Explorer gained 34.5 percent to finish the month at 14,022 sales, the Edge rose 6.2 percent to 10,259 sales, and the Flex jumped 34.5 percent to 3140 sales.Even the aged, body-on-frame, full-size Expedition saw sales rise 9.4 percent to a total of 3361 sales. Lincoln’s MKX crossover increased 8.5 percent, selling 1922 units last month.
Winner: Lincoln MKT
Lincoln’s decision to make the MKT the de facto Town Car might be paying off: sales of the three-row crossover jumped 76.5 percent last month to 697 sales. In all the SUV is up 45.5 percent this year, having sold 3648 units in 2012′s first six months.
Winners: Midsize Sedans and Sports Cars The Ford Fusion had a good month: Ford sold 24,433 units of the mid-size sedan in June, a 17.4-percent increase over June 2011. So far this year the sedan is up 3.9 percent to 136,849 units sold, which is a good sign considering that an all-new 2013 model will be released this fall. The Mustang, meanwhile, jumped 16.2 percent to 10,263 sales–good enough to beat its rival, the Chevrolet Camaro, which sold 9123 units.
Losers: Ford Small Cars
With gas prices dipping once again, it looks like Ford buyers are shifting from small cars back to larger ones. Sales of the Fiesta subcompact were down 17.1 percent, the largest loss of any Ford passenger car last month, ending June at 4589 sales. Meanwhile the Focus compact hatchback/sedan was down 0.9 percent to 21,186 units. It previously seemed like the Focus would meet or pass the Fusion in sales–the Focus is up 34.1 percent to 131,423 sales year-to-date, the Fusion is up 3.9 percent to 136,849 sales–but changing conditions might shift the balance again. After all, gas prices are falling, and Ford’s incentives on the Fusion can be double those on the Focus.
Losers: Lincoln Large Offerings (sans MKT)
The Navigator is dead–long live the Navigator? Okay, the Expedition-based luxury SUV isn’t dead, but Navigator sales are growing stale–it sold just 617 units last month, down 3.9 percent, and total year-to-date sales are up 1.7 percent to 3856 units. It’s nice to see that sales are steady, yes, but the car-based MKT is still on pace to pass it within the next couple of months. Elsewhere on the Lincoln sales sheet, sales of the MKS large sedan were down 10.1 percent to 1091 sales. Fun fact: the Lincoln MKS was the only vehicle riding Ford’s D3 platform to decrease in sales last month.
