Dodge Durango smacks around Ford Explorer in latest TV ads

Since when is Durango a "titan of the SUV world"? It was a joke for years until this new model came out.

Oh how inriguing, I`ve always asked myself who would win. A front wheel drive v6 crossover based on a large car platform or a two million ton 360 hp hemi V8 shaped like a an angry brick. I mean who the hell would need to tow to go to work with one of those in the morning and tow a medium sized house in the afternoon? Stupid, stupid test.

Compared the Durango R/T AWD vs. the Explorer 4WD Limited:
Curb Weight: 5330 lbs. - 4730 lbs. (600 lbs. /= 2 million tons)
Towing Capacity: 7200 lbs. - 2000 lbs. (2 1/2 tons more, there)
HP: 360 hp. - 290 hp.
Torque: 390 lb-ft. - 255 lb-ft. (pwnage!)
They're about the same price for these packages, but hardly seem to be in the same class, imo.

If you wanna a SUV for towing, buy an Expedition, not Explorer. Durango Hemi cost $36,000 for RWD and $39,000 for 4x4 - exact same numbers as Expedition. And they're both rated at 14/20 mpg.

My parents have a '11 explorer and towed their boat which weighs right near 5000lbs boat/trailer combinded perfectly fine.

IMO. Durango has always been garbage. But Chrysler is truly doing their best lately to hit some home runs. They have been on their last leg for a while and need desperately to beat the competition. It's probably a better vehicle than the explorer and the expedition. The explorer and expedition have both been trash since their inceptions. I'm sure that I will get some heat from that one but its true. I was a mechanic for 15 years professionally and I've worked on them all. With the exception of the excursion, ford can't build a mid/full size suv. The excursion should have been named the exaggeration instead but it was very well built. GM still builds the best full sized American suv and Nissan has done a great job with the Armada which I would give the second place ribbon to. I am not biased to one particular brand. This is just my observations through the years.

i get a really big chuckle when I see that commercial for the durango(e)s on the race track when they're supposed to be performance vehicles. Anything that is that bulky is not a performance vehicle, unless it's a baja truck.
The new one's are very "eh" in my opinion, and I still can't get over how ridiculously loud (not exhaust noise) the 1st gens were. It's astounding to me that a vehicle can make that much noise!

gotta hand it to um... they are pretty good commercials. If the plan was to go after the Explorer.... they certainly did. If they have best in class of something, why not capitalize on it?

I have sat in both. the dodge is still a pos with cheap everything. The ford had lcd screens and soft touch every where. The dodge was a 1990s hard plastic nightmare that could me a 1990s dodge van. The dodge was 45k and the ford was the same price. go sit in both and you willsee the dodge is crap.

I like the way they both look, but isn't ford putting a 4 popper in the explorer? And only a 4? If they do discontinue the v6 explorer then would they even be in the same class? I don't really believe they are now but that would make things unfair to compare the two
