Add transmission fluid to gas tank?

My mother in law went to a local garage (Firestone) when the check engine light came on in her Taurus. The mechanic said as the engine ages it will run lean/rich alternately and to run a quart of transmission fluid every 4 tanks of gas to remedy the problem. I have no idea what code caused the check engine light to come on.

Anyone ever heard of running tranny fluid in the gas tank? Only thing I can think of is it has detergents to clean the injectors like injector cleaner?!?!?

I think I am going to run some BG44K through her tank and see if that does the trick.

Just as a gut feeling, I would say dont do it, unless he has a written letter telling you to, so if something screws up he'll be liable. Get some regular injector cleaner.

That sounds a tad absurd..

I would really like to know the rationale behind that advice

Tranny fluid will blow white smoke out the exhaust when burned. just like blowing a modulator valve.

I cannot think of why tranny fluid would be a good thing to run through the gas tank. That makes no sense to me. I'm not even sure how the two would mix in the gas tank. The tranny fluid might float on top of the gas, they might mix nicely, they might turn to some sort of sludge that coats the bottom of the tank with 3" of goo...

The point is, these two chemicals were never meant to play nicely with each other, so let's not experiment.

i use lucas fuel treatment too. IDK, put some seafoam in there, rather than trans fluid.

I did some searching on the internet and various forums and found people recommending the following products (in no particular order):

1. Chevron Techron
2. Lucas Fuel Treatment
3. BG Products BG44K
4. Seafoam

It -seemed- like the two most popular were Techron and BG44K and the Lucas was in there close. On the seafoam, either people swore by it or trashed it though it seemed like the majority liked it.

I went with the BG44K from BG Products http://www.bgprod.com/products/fuelair.html
Can only get it at the local car dealerships and garages (not at parts shops that I could find)... the local Toyota dealer wanted $50 for a 11oz. bottle so I bought 5 bottles off ebay for $60.

I've also used Lucas and it really does make a difference on an older car. Try it out.

Trans fluid in the tank? I know why but never heard that method of implementing it, especially since the transfluid will linger in the tank long afterwards. Last time I used trans fluid outside of a trans was with a carb not Fuel injection. Would be much better off running a little diesel in it every now and then. Neither of which BTW I could see much use in resetting the check engine light. It would help clean deposits but more than likely if something is so dirty it trips a code it more than likely needs replacing. Get the code run and fix the problem, don't trust "mechanics in a bottle", most of the time they hide problems.

Awesome in a can, or rather its one of the better engine depsoit cleaning products out there. I like to use BG44k every once in a while (it costs around 18 bucks a can) in between uses of Lucas top engine treatment.

Heet works really well too. Helped a car pass emissions test with just that.
