2009 F-150 in the buff!
Hmmm, what if Ford used this engine as a basis for a Lightning redux? They could poke and stroke this sucker out to five liters or more, throw in a serious turbo upgrade, provide AWD as standard and we could easily have a seriously hard accelerating torque monster that turns in reasonable mileage. And of course a hi-po diesel pickup would be extremely cool to say the least.
Here's a bit of a description from Kalu on BON:
Had several come down the line a month or so ago, they were all King Ranches, (black and arizona beige), I didn't like the stamped steel lower control arms, don't look near as beefy as the aluminum ones we run now, other than that the cab is also taller as well as longer, it's a looker. Neat little box steps just behind the cab that fold in and out to get into the front of the box instead of having to use the tailgate step to get in. Cool.
Doors are carry over, A-Post foward all new stamping, box is same except all new character lines, tail gate has 3 character lines running horizontal, it looks good in person. Notice how the hood doesn't slope down at the end.

Rumor has it that the base engine for the 2009 F150 will be the 3.7L N/A D37 w/260 hp and 280ft. lbs. at 2000 Rpm. Next up 4.6L 3V 292hp/300ftlb. Then the 5.4 3V at 325hp/380ftlb. All will have 6 speed transmissions!
The 6.2L Boss will debut in the 2009 Navigator.
For the 2010 model year the F150 drops the Triton motors and ads the 4.4L V8 diesel w/315hp/520ftlb; Twin Force 3.7L D37 V6 w/390hp/400ftlb. 6.2L Boss V8 w/425hp/475ftlb. There is a test truck w/the Twin Force 3.7 getting 28 mpg in highway driving.
In 2011 we get the Twin Force 6.2 V8 w/500hp/650ftlbs, hopefully as a "Thunderbolt"
Ford will also add HLA (Hydralic Launch Assist) in the future! It will accelerate a 10,000lb truck up to 25 to 30 mph with NO assist from the engine!!

I've seen much of this before. What has me curious is where the 3.7L Twin Force V6 and the 6.2L Boss V8 will be positioned relative one another fiscally speaking.
Also, Ford should save themselves some dough and just make the 3.7L TF V6 and 6.2L V8 here the combined replacements for the current Mustang GT's 4.6L V8 instead of developing a smaller V8. Despite the huge improvement in terms of power both would likely get better mileage given the massive improvment each represents, and this would allow Ford to offer the consumer greater variety while streamlining production thereby minimizing costs.

Design looks good...yet at the same time, not. Have to see more pics. Overall seems to be more evolutionary than revolutionary, however.
Now that Toyota has completely botched their launch of the redesigned Tundra in many ways, this is a perfect time for Ford to take their time and capitalize on Toyota's mistakes. They need to launch the F-150 smoothly and reliably. With all of the Tundra's problems Ford is bound to have an excellent chance to take away a lot of their customers by giving consumers a better truck.
Then again, I think I could build a better truck than the Tundra in my garage with spare parts.
