Tune advice
Tune advice
As per everyone who voted on my last thread I am going to buy Xcal 2.
I am now looking for advice on which 3 tunes to purchase.
Thinking:
87 performance
91 performance
91 race

Unsure on the real differences between performance, torque and race tunes so any advice (dont be smart)?
I drive 'Murray' quite hard and always like to take off when I get a chance. It rarely gets driven lightly. I dont care about fuel economy, its power that I want. Will eventually take it down to the track and see what happens.
Big thanks again to those who voted and made my decision for me. Now help me choose the tune.

Well youll really need to find out from Doug, what the difference is in the tunes. I'd defintely go with the higher octane either way.
Not heard from Doug yet but I am thinking:
91 Perf
91 Torque
91 Race
That covers all options and I still have the base tune in case anything goes kerplunk. 91 is the highest available so while I'm looking at the good stuff my wallet is crying.
One question before I can order though. "axle code/gear ratio". What is the stock on the 02GT?
As soon as I know I can order.

Dan is right. Also if you just tell him stock gears, he'll know.
Thanks guys.
Might go with 93 instead of 91, only problem is not every gas station around here stocks 93. Do you think any MAJOR problem with putting 91 in in an emergency? I dont see any problem other than possible engine retardation. I notice a slight difference now between 89 and 93 when I swap rarely. I expect a degredation in performance, just dont want engine damage as a result.

If you use 91 octane with a 93 tune, the engine will almost certainly knock (detonate). THat could do some serious damage, so definitely dont do it. I'd carry around some 104 octane booster and just use that with some 91 octane if you cant find 93.

The minor performance increase you'll get from a 93 tune over a 91 isn't worth the added trouble of finding a gas station or going out of your way to find one. Stick with 91 and you'll be good wherever you go. Remember, the 99-04's dont have a knock sensor.
The Torque and Performance programs differ in the range they are aimed at for making power. The Torque is more so a daily driver program that focuses in on the 1500-3500 rpm's band. In order to do so well in that range though it does give up a few HP up top and this is why I break it apart from my Performance adjustments. The Performance program is aimed at more of a 3000rpm and up rpm band focusing in more on the top end horsepower and all out performance driving. This is a great track tune but also works well daily driven. Any of my programs are safe to use for daily driving unless you request a race only tune.
Thanks, Doug.

I think that would be the one tune I ran most.
Any insight?

You should know that it will be the first thing I do when I get it.
