totalled my car - looking for replacement

So I wrecked my '02 intrepid last week and the insurance company is giving me $6900 for it.

With the money I already have that puts me at about $8000-8500 for a replacement vehicle

Now the problem: it has to be somewhat reliable (per parents demand). I want something thats a stick shift with rear-wheel drive and 2 doors (mustang, much?) that I can have fun in and take to the autocross on weekends. I was looking at used BMW 3-series and mustangs (my true love is the 67 fastback, but thats a bit out of my reach)...

So what do I do? any suggestions? I'm open to researching other makes and models, but I'd really like a Bullitt if I'd have to buy a newer model mustang. How much are those going for these days?

Thanks in advance,
sikander

How new are you looking? I paid $7K for my 95 Cobra ( then had to get a new ignition module, wiring harness, and filler tube gasket ). It has almost been 6K since then no problems. Have your mechanic check out any car before you buy it.

Doesnt matter, as long as it won't be broken down every weekend

I'm decent at repairing things, so i can do most of the work myself if need be - but my parents dont want to spend money on repairs all the time

I'm going to see if i can find a job tomorrow, so that should help.

as far as a trans am, im open to it (and my parents would be too) if i can find one for the right price. the problem is that i'd much rather have the 98-02 model style

...*sigh* but beggars cant be choosers!

In that case try Firebird, I doubt that you will be able to find newer Trans Am for that money.

You can get a 96-98 Mustang GT with pretty low miles (60-70k) for that money. If you go newer than that, youre probably gonna have a lot of miles.

Usually you can get a 99-01 v6 mustang for around 6k if it's bone stock. I would go for a fox body myself. Or even a 93 cobra, but for that you might need more like 9k. A 93 black Cobra is extremely sexy!

One fun thing to do, and I want to do this eventually, find a car for the year you were born, and get it. My friend has a 1984 Mustang 5.0 and he's in the process of making it show quality. Just make sure you a happy with the car you'll be buying. If you have your heart set on a mustang, get a mustang. If you look around enough for one you'll find the perfect one.

I settled for an f-150 b/c it would suit me better for work, but within a year of buying it, it was up for sale. I didn't worry about selling it, since Katrina took it away, and I got 22k for a truck I paid 17k. (CHA CHING!) What I'm trying to say, is I had my heart set on a mustang, but I settled for a truck. If you settle for anything short of what your heart wants, you'll be wishing you'd have bought what you wanted.

If you dont have a lot of money to spend once you get your car, a Fox body is nice because there are plenty of parts and you can get them cheap. Just be patient. Dont jump on the first car you see, because others will go on sale too. Make sure you get what you want and dont overpay.

And Dragon, congrats on 500th post!

I just picked up a 99 GT Conv for 8500 less than a month ago, so there are options out there if look.

I have seen a few 2000GT's in the area for around 9K. Decent miles as well. I dont want to bad mouth or upset anybody however in my opinion and my opinion only buy the GT or a Cobra. I say this because I can look at the other Mustangs around, see a single exhaust and no badge on the back and I instantly know I am superior in power. I would have been disapointed with anything less.
At least i know that 90% of the cars on the road can happily look at my cute rear end as I tear down the street.
Whatever you buy just make sure you get your moneys worth. Also consider how much you want to spend in the future and how much time you have available for your project. Trust me, buy a Mustang and you will be adding more aftermarket parts on it than you anticipated, just ask anybody here!!!

You can probably score a good conditioned 96-98 cobra for under 8k.
