Hey guys hope you can help me with a problem. I've had a check engine light for the last two months, ran a scanner and came up with insufficient egr flow. Every once in a while the car just revs high when starting and stays for longer than normal. In cold weather the car sometimes has trouble starting and just seems to bog out and die.
The car also seems to run rougher now at certain rpms.
My boss also had a v6 mustang and he had the egr flow problem also. Is this a pretty common problem? Do you think I would need a new egr valve, or just an egr vale sensor? the car is an 01 stock v6. 31,000 miles. Could it be the sensor broke and thats why the engine has trouble starting sometimes?
Please help me out with any info you could give. Thank You. Brad.

Hi Brad, Mine has the same problem P0401 trouble code, right?

I have read that it is normally the DFPE sensor that causes the problem, and that changing the EGR valve doesn't always solve the problem. I haven't done the work yet, but it looks quite simple.

I do not think this will be causing the bad starting though, the EGR valve recirculates the exhaust gas to keep down the combustion temperature under hard accelleration. You may also notice when keeping a constant speed (around 40mph) that the engine doesn't feel right and the car seeems to judder.

James
