I don't know exactly what it is but when my car is rolling in neutral or if I have the shifter in a gear but the clutch held then i get this sound like something spinning is tapping against something else. This only happens when I am going pretty slow and it dosen't seem to be adversely affecting anything. I really want to find out what the problem is because it is really annoying and I am sure it can't be good for the car.

:bang:

My car is a '94 GT (5spd duh)

Maybe Joker or SVOPaul will chime in, but I think it sounds like the throw out bearing. They are prone to make noises in just about every model out there.

My first thought was the throw out bearing as well, but I have never heard one make a tapping noise. The only ones I have heard go bad make that chirping sound. I am sure Paul would have alot more insight into it than me though, as I have never had any trans problems in my mustangs other than a squeeky tob. One good question though would be how many miles are on your clutch. Clutches, throw out bearings, and pressure plates dont last forever. Either way, get it checked out soon if possible. As I have learned from svopaul, new noises are your warning sign, ignore them and the damage to your drivetrain may be much worse later on. It could just be something in the clutch. However, it could be something in the trans that if it grenades on you will take out the rest of the trans with it.

I used to hear this very lightly in my 02 GT. When I got my 03 Cobra it was very loud. I was told it is normal with the T56 Trans (cobra), Im not sure about the GT trans. Im used to it now but it is surely a rattle spinning type sound in first at a very low speed and a little bit in second again going slow.

Does the noise sound like the movement of gears?

I am having a hard time understanding what kind of noise you are actually hearing
