Hello all,
I was wondering if you could take a look at these pictures and tell me what this is. It appears to be a strange cloudiness that starting a few inches from each end of the spoiler extends in a line across the middle. It looks like a residue of some sort. It did not come of with polish or wax. Can anyone please tell me what it is and what to do about it? Here are some pictures.

 

Looks like the clearcoat is just starting to come up. Meaning it's gonna start peeling soon.

Or I'm totally wrong, but in this case, I'm pretty sure of myself.

 

What should I do?

 

It is the clear coat starting to bubble. You'll need to have the spoiler sanded and re-cleared

 

The only thing I can think of here is just let it go, or get the spoiler repainted/clearcoated. It's not too cheap for us young guys

 

Spoiler delete ftw.

 

It's about $200.00 for a repaint, or go for an aftermarket spoiler.

Yes, I think I may have to go for the spoiler delete option, at least temporally. I know that I need to plug the holes with nylon plugs and put silicone on them. I need silicone anyway for when I get my new headlights. On an unrelated note, does silicone sealant expire?

 

Yes, it will, but what I would do if I were you is wet sand with a very high grit paper (I'll refer Arin to this thread since he has a lot more knowledge on this than I do.) and see if you can get past the affected clear without hitting the paint. If not save yourself a bunch of money doing the prep work, bring it in to a shop and just have it cleared... I wouldn't trust my hand at doing clear with a rattle can, but who knows, it might be good enough if you do a good enough prep/finish.

 

Would a rubbing compound work?

Another thing you could do: Check craigslist for a parting out 01-04 black GT. Check out their spoiler, and if it's better off, offer them 40 bucks. Couldn't hurt.

 

Well pete, wetsanding would be a great solution if it were just some orange peel or something, but this looks to be worse. If the clear is lifting off the spoiler itself, sanding will do pretty much nothin.

you could
a) remove the spolier and go wingless and look clean and classy
b) sand the spoiler down and spray it flat or semiflat, and maybe do some other accents throughout the car and look badass
c) sand the spoiler down and do your own prep and have it painted professionally
d) buy a new spoiler, used stock or otherwise

its all personal preference at this point, but thats pretty much all you got as far as options

my vote is get a terminator lip spoiler

yeah, that's definately clear coat coming off. You'll have to have it redone, or buy a new one...

be glad it's not happening on the body, as for that, I'd reccomend going and giving the car a couple coats of wax, and not using rubbing compound until you're more able to afford a repaint, just incase the paint/clear is getting really thin

 

+1 Repainting is the only way to save it at this point.
