Rear Axle Bearing

Rear Axle Bearing
So I invited Arin over today to help me work on my car, and I suppose that I didn't state it very clearly that we were going to be working on the bearing and not on my wheels, but I digress.
So we took off the caliper/rotor, then dove into the differential. Took out the screw that keeps the pinion something or other out, then Arin attempted to pull out the entire S shaped piece... which isn't the right thing to do apparently. So we reread the instructions and found something far "simpler" which was to push the axle inward, then pull out the c-clip that holds it in place. Simpler was in quotes because it was only simpler in theory, and not in practice. So we went to the mall and got Starbucks to ease our pain.
So my question is: Has anyone ever replaced their right rear axle bearing, and if you have, how did you manage to undo the C-Clip? It seems like we can't push the axle inward enough in order to have the C-Clip pushed out. Arin even took a sledge hammer (lightly) to it. So I know that from where we stand, it's not going to move any more inward. Help? Anyone?

Alright first of all you all should know that it is almost impossible to get rear axle lubricant out of your hair
second, we did not reread the instructions. the manual was fail, the internet explained it better with much easier pictures.
Also peter, we can totally get the C clip out now, its just a matter of doing it. The tools that dude lent us are just hard to use. I was able to use them properly and open up the C clip a little bit, before the spreader snapped.

As it sits now the pinion won't fit back into the place that it's supposed to, and it looks like the posi-trac gears aren't lined up. I dunno how we're gonna fix this one Arin...

What in the hell are you talking about "opening up the C clip a little bit"?!? and what the hell are you doing with a "Spreader"?!?!
This is a straight forward procedure but on that car you have to remove the rear ABS speed sensor so that the axle can move in far enough to allow the C clip to SLIP out...yes, it slips RIGHT out.....if you don't remove the speed sensor you can forget about getting the axle in to get the C clip out without damaging the speed sensor.
Next....What are you doing messing with the Pinion?!?!

Well, we got it all back together. We will have it running by noon tomorrow. If the noise is still there when this is done... Peter's not going to be a happy...
