new or rebuilt

I went to an A/C shop that my friend works to check my dead system. They put some gauges and the sh*t has gas on it. When they turned the compressor, it was like it hasn't anything inside!
He told me I need to either rebuild it or put on a new one.
Which one should I use, new or rebuilt?

My friend told me that a new comp with a system flush, change the O rings, evacuation and recharge will cost me about $550+! THAT sounds too much, I think.

my AC was just under $500 to get it recharged. That doesn't sound too unreasonable
