Key will turn freely in ignition can't turn off the car! Need help!!!

My key will turn freely in the ignition cylinder, if I stall the car out it will start it, but then I can't turn the car off. When I stall the car all the power is still going to all the electronics. When I try to turn the car off and take the key out I can take the key out of the car with me, but the car will continue to run.

I need help quick, and ideas on what it might be?

auto or stick. If its a stick car kill it by putting it in fourth gear and let the clutch out to kill it. Then disconnect the battery.

Just go get a new one from autozone or whatever you have. But do not turn the new key in the cylinder before you put it in your car!!!! Read the instructions or you will ruin it before you even install the new one. been there... Done that...

Mechanic shop just told me its not the cylinder they think it's something in the steering column so they want to replace the whole column. Anybody know what it might be in the column?

I was thinking steering column but I said cylinder. It was the column that had to be replaced in mine.
