Honestly Julie,

In the long run it would be cheaper to have gotten a 5-speed car. I went through this same thing as I had an '00 automatic GT that I loved, but I kicked myself for not getting a manual. It is not a cheap swap, unless you have a donor car (i.e. a wrecked 04 GT 5-spd you can get everything from).

You can however do a few mods to your auto 4r70w tranny that will make the car feel like its a beast and will acctualy make it perform very well. The first thing I would look at getting is a custom chip for it. The chips that Doug904 of http://www.BamaChips.com can provide work very well with the 99-04 GT's. Increased shift pressure and better shift points as well as better a/f ratio and timing increases to get a few more ponies will defintely wake the car up. It did in my '00.

Also I would look at getting a tranny cooler. It will help you tremendously in the long run with the life of the tranny. Most tranny shops will install it fairly cheap (say sub $100) for you. Summitt Racing used to have a great kit. It had a 24,000gvw cooler, all the lines and mounting stuff for under $100 I think. Good buy IMO. I think it was a B&M as well, but I could be wrong.

If you really want to go all out, look into getting a higher stall torque convertor. It will make the car launch like it came out of a slingshot, but watch out, your rear tire tread wear will decrease drastically

Good luck, and dont be afraid or to bummed about hte auto. Its a great tranny especially if modded much.

Btw, if you are dead set on a 5-speed swap, some places sell entire kits to do it. Check out http://www.stangparts.com for example. I've heard good and bad about them so its a toss up really.
