Help me identify this engine
Hey guys, I'm looking at a 2000 GT Convertible and the owner doesn't know what engine is in the car. He said it's a "5.0 crate engine" and that's all he knows. He doesn't have a part number and I didn't see one anywhere in the engine bay. Is anyone on here savvy enough to know what kind of engine this is? My real concern is that the engine is older than the car which would make it fail smog here in CA. Any help at all would be appreciated.

The oil cap is in a different place than the 99-04 4.6L engine, is it not? Just looking up some images on Google the oil cap should be on the left if it's a stock 4.6?

I have no clue, haha. I've tried searching up 5.0 crate engine and it just brings up the new Coyote engine, which obviously is not what this car has. Is it possibly not a Ford engine at all? I test drove the car and it had power and shifted fine. It did sound a little bit more like a hot rod than a typical Mustang if that makes any sense. Also had a check engine light on for an O2 sensor. Possibly because the engine is so dirty? The car is only $1500 but I want to make sure this thing will actually pass smog.

If that's a '96-98 4.6, then I don't think it would pass smog. The engine can't be older than the car, but I have no idea how they would be able to tell? Appreciate the help!

Possibly an off-road pipe? That'll trip the check engine light and give it a raspy/rumbly sound. That right there wouldn't pass smog.

That is what it sounded like, but I didn't check underneath carefully enough to notice.

mrp5150, your seller is mis-representing the engine, 5.0 crate motor? Really? (ding!) People who have more knowledge than you say this engine is inappropriate and probably isn't the one it came with in 2000. (ding-ding!) Have you looked at the VIN? It or the data plate will have the OEM engine notated. "He doesn't have a part number and I didn't see one anywhere in the engine bay." The guy alleges that he is savvy enough to swap out an engine but doesn't know where any identifying numbers are located? (ding-ding-ding!!) Walk away-nay-run away. I'll bet he wants cash too. CA DMV don't care about your great deal, you're looking at a BIG hassle.
One more thing, in CA the SELLER is supposed to provide a current and valid smog certificate before the sale is made. Does he have that? No, run away.
