'99 Mustang SVT Cobra Champcar Pace Car

'99 Mustang SVT Cobra Champcar Pace Car-001.jpgI am a rookie just trying to figure out how to reach people that might know more about the above car. I have sent 2 other messages trying to reach other Mustang forum members regarding ANY history on this Tri-colored Pace Car.
I hope that any of you might be able to point me in the right direction. This is one of at least 2 '99 Mustang Cobra convertibles that Champ Car used for pacing and "Fast Laps".
Thanks for your help.

Wish I could help. Very interesting car, do you have any other angles, or is that it? I can tell you right off that those wheels were not original on that car. Those are the premium wheels from an 05+.

Yeah, I know those aren't the original wheels. The originals were taken off and put on another car. The tail lights aren't cobra lights, either. I've been trying to find some but no luck so far. I'll try to get a couple of other angles of the car posted here.

Welcome to my world! I may be able to shed some light here.
In 1999 (before the Ford exclusive deal of 2003) Champcar had a very diverse fleet of pace cars that in 1999 included a 1987, 1994 Cobra ,1995 Coba clone and two 1999 Cobra's.
Read up and let me now if you end up getting it!

OH and for as for the 99 Cobra tail lights,
So I finally got in touch with Joel Butland...what an awesome guy, he spit out info and memories about my car like he was standin next to it in 2006!
Some interesting facts on my Fastlap car are as follows:
1. It was the fastest of the three 2003 Cobras
2. Spent alot of time in the pits as it broke three bearing retainers.
3. The BBS rep specifically required that it be the only one, of the three 2003 Cobras, to get the "Then New" Plasma RK wheels. He also said that if it was ever photographed on the BBS LM's it was a rare occurance as they were only used when the RK's were having new tires mounted! (guess I know what wheels will be going back on)
4. While being unloaded from the Jumbo Jet, the forklift operator (Not Shawn Racette!) broke one of the tail light lenses, so they called the Champcar Fastlap shop in Indianapolis and had them FEDEX the Tail lights out of the 1999 Cobra that had been stuffed into the tires! (That explains why it has amber turn signals instead of all red like the other 2003 Cobras.
5. The roof strobe was broken by the Ford rep that Loaded the car on a transport the day Ford pulled the plug on the program...(Mamma says not to say anything if i cant say anything nice)
6. He told his employees to NOT gut the cars of their hardware...just the strobe box and fire bottles (Wish he still had those!!)
He is a great guy and is excited for the preservation that is going on by all Champcar Fans.....
Never Forget!
