Using felt for window tinting?
I went to a shop today and asked about window tinting? Price was 195.00 and when I asked if it included the felt, he looked confused. He said that he has tinted about a 1/2 of dozen of 05+ to included his dad's vert and never used felt and did not know where you would use it. He says that no one has said was scratched or messed up the tint. He suggested that his tint is coated and does not scratch.
Question:
Where does the felt go? Do I really need it? He says his is warranted for scratching.
Thanks

They told me the same exact thing. I'm still going to add the felt on my self just to be sure. I dont remeber what its called but It's a type of rail that you take off from the inside of the door panel. There is a thread that explains where and how to put it on by tacobill. Where I put my tint told me they warranty only 30 days for scratch. Maybe same goes for you. The lifetime warranty is for bubbling and they said if it does bubble it will within 30 days. Just my .02 cents.

Ok I have seen that youi need to install felt so the weather channel doesn't scratch your film...I tinted the glass on my wife's 2002 Impala 2 years ago it has almost the same material as my stang I have seen no scractches, she has to put the windows down to get on the military base she works on every day. I think there is no need to change to the soft side of velcro. Any body else tint without changing weigh in. I am going on record as saying it is totaly unessary and a complete waste of time.
I get the same response.. I had mine tinted this last weekend, and everyone looks at me like I have 2 heads when I tell them about the need for felt or something other than the hard rubber that is the window guide. I don't care if some people haven't scratched their tint... it's an ounce of prevention.... even though it was only $170 for 3M film on my windows... the fact that it took all frickin' day to install it was a huge PITA and reason enough to try whatever I can to keep me from having to go back. I have tried for weeks to find moleskin. the one place that actually had rolls of it intened specifically for this purpose was a wholesaler, and I don't have access to it. So... I'm going to just use the soft side of velcro. I can always replace it with moleskin should I come across some.... beside Dr Scholl's corn hole padding or whatever it is.
If anyone is looking for felt, I'd go to www.durofelt.com, they sell it in 25 foot rolls. I got the 1/2"wide x 1/16" thick 25 ft roll with the adhesive backing and it hasn't scratched at all. I was told the same BS that the tint had a coating and wouldn't scratch, well after another tint job here I am. It will definitely scratch without felt on the window liner.
Guess I'll chime in... Many here (and other Forums) have had much success in avoiding scratching their window tint film by adding Velco or moleskin.
From responses from members in various areas, it seems that the Velcro adhesive starts to melt (gets gooey) in very hot climate areas (ie. AZ, NV, etc.). In these hotspots, looks like moleskin is the way to go.
It's really up to you. Velco/Moleskin is like cheap insurance, you want it or not?

I have scoured the forums for somewhere to purchase moleskin or felt strips... maybe I'm atarded.. but now I feel like I'm getting somewhere.
I had the guy I got to tiny my windows tell me the car didn't need it, but I had lots of scratches on my tint just a couple months later. Especially at the bottom, where the window goes up and down every time you open the door.
This time around, I'm getting the moleskin. I'll probably do that myself before taking it in for tinting. Gonna order the durofelt today, so I've got it right away.

It's only 7.50 and it saves a lot of headaches...I couldn't stand looking out my scratched glass anymore so I got that roll and got it retinted. Going on 3 months now without a scratch. (First tint job scratched within 2 weeks and looked horrible before I replaced it at 6 months old) BTW if you just got your windows tinted last weekend I'd hold out on rolling them down until you can install the strips. Not good to chance it.
where to get moleskin?
I've seen where you get the felt (I have it installed).. but we are getting the glue smear out here here in Southern Az.. (its been 105F+ recently).. I was able to clean it off the windows.. But.. If moleskin doesn't have the smearing problem I want to use it.. but. where do I get it?

Did you use the velcro soft stuff, or did they install durofelt at the tint shop? I just ordered a 25' roll of durofelt, should be here in a few days. That's way more than I need. Hopefully the glue on the back of it won't get gooey in the heat here, or I'll have the same problem.
Its felt.. I don't think its from "durofelt". I "made" the dealer install it with felt (they told me they would so I made sure they did).. and of course they didn't know where to get it.. so they had the tint shop that did the work install it. I have since told the dealer about durofelt and they bought a few rolls of it themselves.. I didn't ask them yet if anyone with durofelt is having the streaking problem.

I used the Velcro and it has slid down a 1/4" from the window going down just on the driver side, it's like the glue is a little to gooey. I live in Edmonton Alberta so it doesn't get super hot here but we have had some warm days lately. I am going to try the felt maybe it will adhear better.

****, my shipment from Durofelt is supposed to arrive today. Car's not here yet though. Might try to find some moleskin, or maybe ask the dealer where they get their cars tinted, and if they put moleskin or something on the wipes.
I haven't had any problem with the durofelt. I keep my car parked in an open parking lot with the sun blazing down on it all day long in 80-90 degree heat. It's still in perfect condition. No melting glue or sticky stuff on the windows. The strip on the passengers side has shifted up slightly (maybe 1 centimeter or so), but hardly noticable at all.
I figure, even if it does happen, and the glue gets a little messy ... by the end of the summer, I'll take the doors apart again, clean the goop off, and replace the strips. The durofelt stuff is so cheap, it's easily replaceable.
