Anyone know of a navigation unit that would simply plug into the outlet on the dash in such a manner as to put the screen between the two a/c ducts above the outlet? I'm talking about something like the cell phone holder/chargers that are a one piece unit: the holder has a plug and is shaped like an "L" in which you just dock your phone onto the bracket that is plugged into the outlet...no wires.

Not going to happen, the GPS unit needs to be on the dash with a clear view of the sky. No self contained GPS unit that I know of has a corded external antenna. I use my Ipaq PDA for gps use. Has a lot more functions and is easier to use, the only drawback is the screen size is a bit smaller.

You can do this if you are using a pocket pc based gps system which imho is the cheapest, most flexible way to go and works great. Check out http://www.arkon.com/ ...they have a unit I bought that holds, charges, and amplifies the sound of the pocket pc.

As for line of sight you just get a blue tooth pocket pc and a blue tooth gps reciever (I have the belkin one) and wirelessly mount the gps part on the dash for line of sight to the sky.

ps-www.gpspassion.com is a great place to go for anything gps...

I think there are several units. Cobra, Magellan, Garmin might have what you need. The garmin 3600 (looks like the one pictured by justme 97) can plug into the dash plug, and sit on the dash. They have an accessory holder for the top of the dash that just sits on the dash.

But, from displays I have seen at best buys or circuit city; it looks like the plug in units will fit in the location you want; just not sure how big they are relative to the space you have. A question might also arise of how to locate the antenna. the 3600 is built into the unit; no additional wires. Other units require location of an antennae.

You should also look on crutchfieds. They probably have some units.
