Opinions on a Good Double Din HU??

I'm interested in upgrading the stock head unit, but I want to keep the double din size of the stock unit. I like the simple look of the stock unit too, I just want a better sounding unit. Any suggestions for a simple looking, preferably double din unit? Also, would like to keep the mp3 capability and the in dash changer. (I know, I'm picky...I just want the stock unit except better sounding)

I'm not interested in NAV or DVD or anything super fancy (read: expensive)

If I went with a single DIN unit, are the faceplates that cover the unused space ugly? I don't want it to look like I bought a $28K car and have a $20 stereo in it, you know? But I also don't want to spend $1K+ on the stereo either. I'm hoping for around $200ish.

There's actually a LOT of DD heads, you just need to know where to look- and I'm going to help.

Be aware that I never mentioned cheap pricing. That Panasonic Tube model is absolutely stunning, and would work real well in a retro-themed car.

Crutchfield has a few in the $200 to $400 range, mainly made by Kenwood, JVC and Clarion.

That's probably the one I'll be going with soon.

Yeah, really not wanting to spend $1,500 on a head unit. I've been looking around and evidently there are not really any aftermarket options for in dash disc changers. Oh well, the Shaker is good enough I suppose. I really don't have any $$ anyway.

Just got this from a member on here. This one upgrade makes all the difference in the sound from the stock subs. I have upgraded my other speakers with Boston Acoustics SX50 components for the front, and the SX85 for the rear deck. With a good HU that can seperate the power and signal to the subs, you'll realize that they aren't that bad... and at my age, the power from the HU is more than enough to get my ears ringing. Just realize that if you swap out the HU, you will need to tweak the settings to get the most out of it.

+1 on the Kenwood. I just picked up one of these: http://www.crutchfield.com/S-ICQbJ5Gz6yG/cgi-bin/prodview.asp?I=113dpx501&search=kenwood+501

Looks great, especially at night. The display is red and blue. Great sound, lots of features, no complaints whatsoever.

Yeah, from what I have read the 701 is pretty good. It offers the usb input, so if you have an ipod or anything you can use that in replacement of a cd changer. If you want to keep your cd changer, it does also have the cd changer controls. Plus it even has a Graphic Motion Analyzer feature that will read and track vehicle performance specs.

Did you install it yourself? I ask because the Best Buy website says that this unit is a NO FIT for a 2005 Mustang. Most of the single-din units are listed as FIT, so they must adjust for a dash kit...right?

You may have looked at the DPX302. I do not believe they actually have the 501 or 701 at their site. They are not the same, and I saw previously on Crutchfield that the 301, 501 & 701 do fit the Mustang. The 302 is not based off of the same model as the others, so the fit may be a little off.

I just installed the DPX-501.......

Picked one up on ebay for $150. love the usb. Comes with cool voice control software that sorts your music with voice prompts. very nice looking unit with blue and red lighting that looks great at night with the dash set blue. Be sure to install a voltage regulator in the harness or you will get a loud thump when you turn it on. I must admit the advanced features are not very user friendly and the book isn't much better but if you take the time to figure it all out, you will be impressed with what the stock speakers are capable of.........
